  2. Community Involvement • The Juvenile Justice System needs to bring back the trust of the community. • Community sees the juvenile system as too lenient

Community Involvement • What does the team proposes to have the community to be involve in the juvenile justice system. • Create community projects that involve the youth and good law abiding citizens • Make role models of citizens for the youth offenders to follow • Examples of involvement: • Community and youth offenders work together in making home repairs and gardening for the elderly • Volunteer in community shelter and being train in ways to deal with the population in the shelters • Community being part of the decision making in youth offenses

  5. Law Enforcement How do we fix it? • More training at the academies. • Post Academy Training • Seminars with other departments. • Implementation of a fully Integrated Database.

  6. Courts • Will increase the legal power of the parents and community agencies responsible for children • Parents will be more involved • Court monitor the social services efforts regarding the services offered to neglected and abused children

  7. Courts • Child neglect and abuse will be considered delinquency • For example, Oregon is a state that passed a law that if a child violet a law the parent is fined and is forced to attend parenting classes. • Based on the idea poor parenting is the cause of juvenile misbehavior.

Corrections • The first recommendation is to create or even expand county based treatment facilities that are able to absorb the youth offender population that is currently being housed in state run correctional facilities. • The second recommendation that will be presented to the state legislature is to create a permanent funding stream that will transfer the resources from state run correctional facilities to the county probation departments.

Corrections • The third recommendation will be to establish a state controlled oversight body that will be able to provide technical assistance and monitoring of county and regional juvenile justice treatment and supervisory programs. • The fourth and final recommendation that will be presented to the state legislature is to use private and non-profit agencies’ evidence based services and programs to expand the range of correctional options at the county and regional level as well.
