PROJECT OBJECTIVE Development of web and mobile-based platform (Uwazi) to track court cases, completed cases, court trials/proceedings and injunctions relating to corruption, accountability and transparency in the administration of criminal justice system in Nigeria. The platform will enable court officials and stakeholders to scan, upload, publish court documents and create table of contents while end users can search, filter documents, track changes, cross reference and download documents/court rulings
WHY DIGITIZATION OF COURT JUDGEMENT? Easy access to court cases, transparency in judiciary system and promote accountability in IMPLEMENTATION of the administration of criminal justice system in Nigeria. a. More participation of the citizen b. Citizen can understand the way the ACT (law) works c. Citizen can hold government officials accountable d. Improved services for court users e. Court cases can easily be traced f. Effective case management
ABOUT THE PLATFORM • The platform is created using an open source software called Uwazi. The open source application was developed by Huridocs. • HURIDOCS is an NGO that supports human rights defenders by use of information technologies and documentation methods to organize and present data. HURIDOCS is based in Geneva
WHAT IS UWAZI • Uwazi means “to organize documents” • Uwazi is built to create connections between documents in order to better understand case trend and share the connection.
Court Case Digitization is not new in Some countries For example, electronic legal communications have been firmly established and stable in Austria since 1999 and in U. S. court proceedings electronic online case files have been the standard in the federal courts for more than a decade.
Specific cases can be search on the Platform Uniqueness of the Platform End users can search, filter documents, track changes, cross reference and download documents/court rulings
