Early history • Minstrel Shows started in Europe and were cheap entertainment. • The Black Crook – first musical in NYC in the 1870’s – wasn’t very popular, but was the first. “Little Johnny Jones” by George M. Cohan – 1st American musical 1904 • 1920’s-the beginning…the musical concept takes off! Ziegfield Follies, Porter, Gershwin, Rogers & Hammerstein.

  4. Depression-1950’s • Oklahoma – wrote & music composition – Rogers & Hammerstein. • Themes – Americana, Romantic, Social Issues (Racism, Civil Rights, Women’s Rights) • Most popular form of entertainment in this era.

  7. Revival of Broadway (1980’s) • Revival of NYC- Urban renewal • Cats – original London Cast- was so successful in London, hoped to duplicate in NYC. 1stBroadway show to command a $100 per ticket. • Disney-Michael Eisner $ Continued to revitalize NYC through his contribution and marketing.
