True Story – Fortune 100 EMPLOYEE Development and MANAGER Involvement One day a manager, Max, complained that the lead worker in the unit he‘d just taken over was being difficult – making a lot of mistakes, not following up on commitments, etc. He said, “When I applied for the job in the unit, my reservation was that I'd had no experience with their processes. Then we'll see what needs to be done. If there is more experience or training you need, I'll work that out with you. And when the next opportunity comes along, we'll do some more role-playing for the interview if you think that would be helpful.” Max was suddenly aware that she was crying. “I'm sorry,” he said. “Did I say something that offended you?” She said, “No. Not at all. It's that I've worked here for twelve years and you're the first person who's ever taken an interest in what I wanted to do with my career.”
