  3. WHY ARE WE HERE? • 1 • 2 • 3 • To qualify for the program we are about to discuss you must complete this mandatory session. Attendance will be taken as you depart.

  4. Qualifying for this initiative • Please have your OneCard swiped as you depart to ensure that you are entered into the program. • Remember – if you received less than a B- in BU111, you must verify that you have attended this session to qualify for the extra participation marks! • If you received a C- or less in BU111, you must also meet with one of the BBA Academic Advisors (or Laurier International if applicable) to qualify • If you don’t have your OneCard please come to the front and see Michael Lisetto-Smith.

  5. BBA PROGRESSION REQUIREMENTS • To progress to second year: • Minimum 7.0 (B-) grade point average (GPA) in your business courses: BU111, BU121 = 14 grade points total needed • Minimum 5 (C) GPA in non-business courses • 5.0 credits overall; course repeats cannot exceed 1.0 credits • To graduate: • Must maintain a cumulative 7 in BU courses and 5 in non-BU courses throughout • If you want to enter the Co-Op program: • Generally need at least an 8 overall GPA to be considered • You want to ensure that you have a “buffer” in your GPA

HIGH IMPACT ACTIVITY GRADE • BU121 has partnered with numerous campus services to offer high-impact activities for academic and personal development • Attending a high-impact activity is worth 0.5%, to a maximum of 3%, of your 10% BU121 participation grade • Note: You do not have to attend these activities to get the full 10% participation grade, but 10% is the max participation grade you can receive • 3% equals 1 grade point which is the difference between a 6.0 (C+) and a 7.0 (B-)

HIGH-IMPACT ACTIVITIES FOR SUCCESS • Meeting with your Professor • To discuss course content and course expectations. • Bring your notes, books, solutions, and questions with you. • To qualify, the meeting must be deemed meaningful by the professor. • e.g., How many grades is our assignment worth? compared to • e.g., How do concepts A and B relate to each other? How can I ensure success on this assignment?

HIGH-IMPACT ACTIVITIES FOR SUCCESS • Meeting with your Tutorial Assistants (TAs) • To discuss assignment requirements, lab activities and group dynamics. • Bring your assignments, lab work, or your team (if applicable). • To qualify, the meeting must be deemed meaningful by the TA. • e.g., We don’t get along with x team member, how can we remove him? compared to • e.g., How can we improve our collaboration skills to ensure that our team is working effectively?

  9. HIGH-IMPACT ACTIVITIES FOR SUCCESS • Meeting with one of your Academic Advisors • To discuss program, progression, and co-op requirements. To interpret GPA results and recommend support services. • To qualify, the meeting must be deemed meaningful by the academic advisor. • e.g., What grades do I need to meet progression requirements? compared to • e.g., I’d like to discuss my grades in the program and what my options are for meeting progression requirements. • www.wlu.ca/sbe/advising

HIGH-IMPACT ACTIVITIES FOR SUCCESS • Meeting with a Learning Strategist • To assess your current learning process and provide recommendations to further develop your study skills and learning strategies. • To qualify, the meeting must be deemed meaningful by the learning strategist. • e.g., What do I need to do in order to get an A? compared to • e.g., How can I modify the way I learn to ensure that I am learning in an efficient and effective manner? • www.wlu.ca/study/appointments

  12. HIGH-IMPACT ACTIVITIES FOR SUCCESS S.I. participants were more likely to receive higher A grades and lower DF grades than nonparticipants. • Attending S.I. Sessions • To develop new learning strategies within the context of the BU121 course through group work and activities. • Bring your notes, textbooks, and any questions you may have. • To qualify you must attend the whole S.I. session and actively participate in the activities. • www.wlu.ca/si

Assistants • To discuss different ways to review your course materials to ensure that you are engaging and learning the material effectively. • To qualify, the meeting must be deemed meaningful by the S.I. assistant. • e.g., What do I need to know for the test? compared to • e.g., How can I improve my note taking skills in BU121 to ensure that I am prepared for tests and exams? • www.wlu.ca/study

HIGH-IMPACT ACTIVITIES FOR SUCCESS • Attend an in-residence BU121 Student Success Workshop • To discuss and learn different study skills and learning strategies to make you an effective learner. • To qualify, you must attend the whole workshop and actively participate in the activities. • Schedule: • January 21st, Strategies for Success in Business • February 25th, BU121 Midterm Preparation Strategies • March 18th, Finishing Strong in Business 7:30-9:00 pm in 345 King Street Residence 9:00-10:30 pm in Bricker Residence

HIGH-IMPACT ACTIVITIES FOR SUCCESS • Attend an AASP Study Hall (Varsity/Club Athletes Only) • To complete and review your BU121 course work either individually or as a small group under the facilitation of your Athlete Academic Mentor. • To qualify, you must by a Golden Hawk Athlete, attend the whole study hall session, and demonstrate that you have completed BU121 work. • www.wlu.ca/aasp

HIGH-IMPACT ACTIVITIES FOR SUCCESS • Meeting with your International Student Advisor (International Students Only) • To assess your current challenges and provide guidance and referral to the appropriate resources. • To qualify, you must be an international student and the meeting must by deemed meaningful by the international student advisor. • www.wlu.ca/laurierinternational
