A LOOK INTO STEM EDUCATION IN BLACK AMERICA • African Americans Studying STEM: Parsing the Numbers • In 2006, 34% of African-American freshmen intended to major in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) fields. • That number is larger than the percentage of incoming white freshmen--29.5%--who planned to major in science or engineering. A LOOK INTO STEM EDUCATION IN BLACK AMERICA • African Americans Studying STEM: Parsing the Numbers • Blacks made up 13.3% of freshmen starting college in 2001, but received just 9% of the bachelor’s degrees, and 8.8% of the bachelor's degrees in STEM fields, granted 4 years later. • Blacks represented 5.3% of graduate enrollment in STEM fields in 2001. They earned just 2.5% of all STEM doctorate degrees granted in 2005.

NATIONAL DIRECTIVES • Academic Excellence To fully achieve the goals of this Society, we will work toward a model of academic improvement on EVERY level of membership. With academic success and retention as our objectives; we will develop new initiatives and enhance our existing programs to improve our members' academic reporting, performance, and recognition. • Pipeline Development Understanding that the future is our responsibility; we will work toward developing a more concrete method by which to positively impact our communities. We will look to further expand and support targeted programs like SEEK, and engage our chapters in a grassroots approach to assure that we are positively affecting every level of our members, from our NSBE Jr. to our Alumni. Calvin Phelps NSBE National Chairperson 2010-2011
REGIONAL DIRECTIVES • Membership We are comprised of our membership, without the membership NSBE cannot and will not exist. One of the focuses this year will be on providing the membership with what they need to bring out the fullest benefit of membership. • Leadership Strengthening the region requires strengthening of the leadership. We cannot lead without the proper tools and our focus this year will be on developing all aspects of servant leadership. Succession, without this leadership would stop. In order to continuously grow we must provide new views of the leadership, no more that untouchable view. • The Pipeline As we continue to grow, we must remember that our organization is comprised of many types of membership. Simple Things to Know in a NSBE Meeting The duty of the Parliamentarian is to keep the time, order and professionalism within the meetings Your duties as NSBE members or guests is to know these common vocabulary and votes: I lead the meetings. You follow and express yourself when acknowledged. • “I Second” • Every time a motion has been move anyone must second it to move on. Not doing so will result for the motion to die. I will ask if anyone second’s it to be sure. • “I Object ” • When I bring something up, whether its an idea, event, or voting, you can say this immediately. When you do not agree with a motion. STATE YOUR REASON There will be voting in the form of majority of hands, roll call, or by ballot We vote against, in favor of, and to abstain By: Pearlita G.
