NDIIPP Access Project - 2 • Perfect Metadata Is NOT Required • CompleteMetadata is NOT Required • Good Metadata IS Useful • Good Can Be Improved Over Time and Can Become Better • Exploration Works Well – You Can See What Works and What Will Work Better
NDIIPP Access Project - 3 • All You Need to Start: • - Multiple Tag/Value Records (Mark-up Language– XML MODS) OR • - Multiple Rows/Columns (Spreadsheet – XLS) • How Will Your Data Fit? • - Tag Cloud, Map, List, Faceted Browse, Timeline, Single-Collection Search
NDIIPP Access Project - 4 • Focus is put on the most commonly used elements. • The elements that provide key access points such as dates and locations should be as clear as possible so that the data is the most accurate and consistent for presentations. • The better the data can be, the better the results.
NDIIPP Access Project - 5 • How a Metadata File Gets Translated into a Presentation Examples: -Web Archive Metadata (XML) -NDIIPP Catalog of Partners (XLS)
NDIIPP Access Project - 6 Examples of best practices for place and date: • Place: • <location>Springfield, OH</location> • <location>39.92, -83.8</location> (latitude and longitude) • <district>41<district>, <state>CA<state> • Date: • <date>2008-03-03</date> • <dateCaptured>2008-09-30T20:07:55-8:00</dateCaptured>
NDIIPP Access Project - 7 Import Requirements (Starting Set): • Browse a directory and choose file to import. • Add a collection by pointing to a URL. (example file formats: rectangular spreadsheet, XML MODS, ContentDM) • Add metadata about the collection itself. This metadata includes: Organization, Archive, Size, Subjects, Content, Languages, Restrictions
NDIIPP Access Project - 8 Display Requirements (Starting Set): • Show/hide data fields • Reorder data fields • Modify label names • Specify page elements and lenses of the data (e.g. tag cloud, facet browse, etc) • Implement the Timeline feature • Implement the Maps feature • Publish collection in Recollection when complete
Coming in next phase(s) • Policy control (for example to restrict access to current subscribers) • Dynamic collections (updates from source data without need for manual refresh) • Extensible metadata transforms (to deal with specialized formats and conventions) • Ability to cross-reference metadata within an institution’s collections • Customized appearance • Schema-driven import for arbitrary XML 12
NDIIPP Access Project - 9 • Questions, requests, suggestions, comments on proposed requirements, participation? • ndiippaccess@loc.gov
