  8. A focus on Saudi Arabia 1/2 • Arab Advisors Group just concluded a major survey of 674 cellular users in the main cities of Saudi Arabia. Full results of the survey are out today Dec 10, 2006. • Some findings: • 24.6% of respondents use VoIP (65% of which use it on a PC to PC basis). • 72% had not changed a mobile operator before. • 89.6% use Nokia handsets, and 35.2% change their handsets at least once a year. • 91% use SMS. • 56.7% are aware of 3G services.

A focus on Saudi Arabia 2/2 • 20.33% of Saudi Arabia’s cellular subscribers report using both Al Jawwal and Mobily networks. • The need for separate business and personal lines is the main reason for having more than one line (53.9% of those with more than one cellular line). Cost savings was a reason for 22.8% of respondents with more than one mobile line. • The substantial overlap of subscribers revealed in the market (between Al Jawwal and Mobily networks) may indicate that the actual penetration rate in the country is lower than what the reported numbers of both operators indicate given that a good one fifth of individual subscribers are subscribers of both operators.

Some effects of growth in prepaid GSM • The “pagerization” of prepaid GSM service in many large markets. • In Egypt and Morocco, prepaid GSM monthly average minutes of usage is less than 20 minutes. • 26% of GSM users in Egypt and 80% of GSM users in Morocco still use payphones for national calls.
