  1. Waste and SustainabilityMarch 20th 2013 David Weatherly School Improvement Adviser Environmental Education and Sustainability Consultant

  2. It is increasingly clear that, in the early years of the 21st century, an education that carries on its traditional role of replicating society unquestioningly is no longer appropriate, and that we urgently need to find new models and approaches from which to build while retaining continuity with existing good practice.” Sterling (2002) Education for Sustainability

  3. What is education for?

  4. Education must be: • Transformative • Socially critical

  5. Education: • ‘About’- (knowledge, understanding, skills, attitudes and values) • ‘In’, - ‘through’ and ‘with’ (learning environments) • ‘For’ - (children and young people as “agents of change”)

  6. Sustainability The ultimate goal of achieving a global balance when all are able to live comfortably without compromising the quality of life of future generations.

  7. Sustainable Development What we do now to contribute towards achieving the ultimate goal of social justice, economic security, environmental stewardship and democracy for all.

  8. Education for Sustainability Supporting children and young people to see the links between themselves and the wider natural and social environment and to adopt behaviour and practices that contribute to creating a more just, equitable and sustainable world.

  9. Farming in Malawi More people in the world are stopping smoking. This is very bad for Malawi as lots of people aren’t buying as much TABACCO as they used to. The reason why this is bad for Malawi is because Malawi are very poor in most areas and they are the main TABACCO growers. Farming in Malawi is very hard because when it rains, the rain comes in a big block called the wet season. When it isn’t wet it is boiling hot, so it is very hard to grow crops in perfect condition. In Malawi it is normally very hot. In the wet season it rains loads.

  10. What of the new National Curriculum for 2014?
