  1. Honors Statistics November 7-10, 2011

  2. Monday, November 7, 2011AP Statistics A • Write a paragraph describing how you would find the middle 50% of a normally-distributed population. Then calculate the z values for such a population. • An self-professed elite school accepts only the upper 7.5% of the class based on SAT verbal scores. Assuming a mean of 500 and standard deviation of 100, what is the minimum SAT score a student needs to achieve in order to qualify for this school?

  3. Tuesday, November 8, 2011AP Statistics Awarm-up • A normally-distributed population has 63.6% of its population at a value of 14.2 with a standard deviation of 4.2. What is the mean of the distribution? • What percentage of a normal distribution lies above 1.54 standard deviations?

  4. Tuesday, November 8, 2011Quiz instructions • Clear your desks of everything except the z-table, your notebook, and your calculator. • Write your answers in the test booklet provided. • Be sure to show your work. An unsupported correct answer receives practically no credit. • If you finish early, read or work on other classes. If you talk, I will take that into consideration when calculating your 10% cooperation grade.

  5. Wednesday, November 9, 2011AP Statistics A warm-up • Area to z-score/mean: what is the mean of a normally-distributed population if the standard deviation is .5 and the point at which 15.6% of the population lies below 8.7? • Area to z-score/standard deviation: what is the standard deviation of a normally-distributed population whose mean is 20 and where 26% of the population lies below 15.6?

  6. Thursday, November 10, 2011AP Statistics A warm-up • Area to z-score/mean: what is the mean of a normally-distributed population if the standard deviation is 3.89 and the point at which 29.8% of the population lies below 28.3? • Area to z-score/standard deviation: what is the standard deviation of a normally-distributed population whose mean is 38 and where 44.6% of the population lies below 30.7?

  7. Thursday, November 10, 2011AP Statistics A changes (Q2) Grading scale: Homework: 20% Projects: 20% Quizzes: 40% Final: 20% HW due at the beginning of class; late HW gets no credit Students receiving lower than a B are required to attend mandatory Tu-Th tutoring, 3-4 pm.
