20. April 6, 1917: US Declares War “The world must be made safe for democracy. Its peace must be planted upon the tested foundations of political liberty . . . We are but one of the champions of the rights of mankind. We shall be satisfied when those rights have been made as secure as the faith and the freedom of nations can make them.” -Woodrow Wilson

21. Mobilizing • May 1917: Selective Service Act • All men to register to be randomly selected to serve in the military • 24 million registered

22. 1917 – Selective Service Act 24,000,000 men registered for the draft by the end of 1918. 4,800,000 men served in WW1 (2,000,000 saw active combat). 400,000 African-America were put in segregated units. Most were put in non-combat duties. 15,000 Native-Americans served as scouts, messengers, and snipers in non-segregated units.
