Some use cases in fix/mobile TV convergence ETSI Starter Group on Digital Content Distribution July 7, 2008
Why focusing on use cases? • They are essential to: • Make the link with business models, essential to justify the effort • Define clearly what to achieve • Define the role models and interactions, particularly complex in converging world ETSI Starter Group on Digital Content Distribution July 7, 2008

IPDC technologies impactedin fix/mobile convergence ETSI Starter Group on Digital Content Distribution July 7, 2008
IPDC Technologies • IPDC toolbox currently allows for • ESG over broadcast and interaction networks • Content distribution over broadcast and 3G • Service purchase & protection based on OSF, 18Crypt and soon BCAST Smartcard profile • Mobility within DVB-xH networks and session re-selection over 3G • Fix/Mobile « convergence » are expected to bring new requirements on existing building blocks ETSI Starter Group on Digital Content Distribution July 7, 2008
IPDC technologies impactedin fix/mobile convergence • Technology ingredients in current scope of IPDC that are impacted • ESG for the fix/mobile context • Evolved IPDC ESG toolbox should allow for: • Discovery of ESG and access over « local networks » • Aggregation from multiple ESG sources • Duplicate programming consolidation • One challenge to resolve is the Coexistence and/or convergence with other ESG specifications within the same environment (IPDC / BCAST, IPDC / IPI) • Extensions to support local (home) network specific content could/should be considered as well, particular to handle user content ETSI Starter Group on Digital Content Distribution July 7, 2008
IPDC technologies impactedin fix/mobile convergence • Adaptation of IPDC specs for other IP bearers (eg Wifi) • Content Delivery Protocols (CDP) • Delivery profiles commonly available on identified bearers should be supported by IPDC terminals (eg RTSP profile) • Electronic Service Guide (ESG) • Instantiation of IPDC ESG in local network environment • Distributed ESG • « User-generated » ESG • Service Purchase & Protection (SPP) • IPDC SPP profiles in local network ETSI Starter Group on Digital Content Distribution July 7, 2008
IPDC technologies impactedin fix/mobile convergence • Technology ingredients going beyond current scope of IPDC • Interworking with network domains • Discovery and authorization resolution to access « non-home » networks (sometimes known as « roaming » networks) • Media adaptation (e.g. format & bit rate adaptation) • Mobility support • Matching of similar services available in different domains • Media adaptation • « Seamless » handover ETSI Starter Group on Digital Content Distribution July 7, 2008
Meaningful “Mobile” SDO’s in the scope of fix/mobile convergence ETSI Starter Group on Digital Content Distribution July 7, 2008
Meaningful “Mobile” SDO’s in the scope of fix/mobile convergence • OMA-BCAST • Specified solutions similar to IPDC • Looking at extending use of BCAST specifications in IPTV context • Have BCAST Service Guide referenced in ETSI/TISPAN • BCAST IPTV vision seems not totally clear • Might be worth considering in context of IPDC/BCAST convergence ETSI Starter Group on Digital Content Distribution July 7, 2008
Meaningful “Mobile” SDO’s in the scope of fix/mobile convergence • 3GPP • Started Work Item on « Extending PSS and MBMS User Services for Optimized Mobile TV Services » for Release-8 • Started Work Item on « IMS initiated and controlled PSS and MBMS User Service » • May be worth considering for 3G/DVB handover tools ETSI Starter Group on Digital Content Distribution July 7, 2008
Meaningful “Mobile” SDO’s in the scope of fix/mobile convergence • IEEE • Has Study Item on DVB integration in 802.21 framework aiming at designing link layer capability for handover between heterogeneous networks • May be worth considering for DVB/IEEE802.xx handover scenarios ETSI Starter Group on Digital Content Distribution July 7, 2008
Conclusions (?) ETSI Starter Group on Digital Content Distribution July 7, 2008
Conclusions • Fix/Mobile convergence from IPDC perspective is a multi-dimensional problem • Technical • Are the current tool concepts are suitable for convergence? • How do we balance between convergence and coexistence of technologies? Shouldn’t the focus be on interworking? • How do we deal/liaise with relevant organizations? • Commercial • Which use case roadmap has to be considered for generating sensible commercial requirements? • Do we make the right balanced between the « traditional » TV and new TV paradigms? • How to ensure the right players are involved in this topic? • Marketing/Strategic • How to ensure that the right groups are doing the right things • How to liaise/cooperate with the relevant SDO’s to the benefit of all • Less technology fragmentation • Less resource fragmentation ETSI Starter Group on Digital Content Distribution July 7, 2008
