  2. What is Civil Survival Online? Civil Survival Online is a learning program and methodology that is proven to develop problem-solving skills using legal content with predictableand explicit instruction.

Course Objectives • Participants will learn… • will understand the importance of transitioning offenders having the critical knowledge necessary to navigate everyday legal struggles • to use relevant instructional content to teach students the skills necessary to deal with common legal situations • to design instruction that integrates problem-solving skills, critical analysis and evaluation in a succinct and systematic process using legal content • how the restorative practice model is incorporated in the Civil Survival Online course modules

Learning Theory About the Courses . . . • Predictable, explicit, vocabulary-defined • Assessments are embedded through reflective writing. • Critical thinking skills are honed through problem- based case study scenarios. • Increased complexity builds on the basic foundation of vocabulary and common knowledge. Skill building is based on “real life.”

  5. Values-Based Decision-Making • Problem-based learning increases ethical decision-making • Courses are based on common legal understandings.

Necessary Skills • Literacy skills are required to: • Read a contract • Interact with employers and co-workers • Complete complicated forms • Understand the terms in a lease • Sign up for basic utilities and services • Comprehend requirements of the workplace • Responsibly navigate marital and child custody matters

The Importance of Life Skills • Life Skills require: • Basic Education as well as • the ability to integrate and synthesize information and to interact with new and changing circumstances Participants learn the importance of meaningful participation as a citizen through understanding of basic legal rights. Simultaneously, they are learning complex literacy skills by applying the substantive content in case studies crafted to model real world situations.

  8. Case Studies • Civil Survival Online content is based on hypothetical case studies requiring: • Regular contact with forms • Contracts • Instructions that prepare people to successfully navigate society upon re-entry

Civil Survival Online • Civil Survival Online • Teaches basic legal principles • Applies these principles to real life scenarios • Helps to prepare re-entering populations to engage in everyday legal situations • Negotiating a lease • Properly handling workplace challenges • Dealing with family law issues, such as child custody and divorce

  10. Course Distribution • 3 ways to access online training courses: • Learning Management System (LMS) • Client Hosting • Stand-Alone Courses

  11. Learning Management System • This choice provides access to the training courses through the Civil Survival Online Learning Management System (LMS) • Note: This choice requires Internet access.

  12. Client Hosting • For this choice, the client can host the online training courses on their own internal LMS. • If you choose to host our training content on your internal web platform, Civil Survival Online will generate an HTML package that can be unzipped to run in your hosting environment. • Note: If you have no Internet access, the courses will be displayed without media asset (images, ideas, audios) and in text only.*

  13. Stand-Alone Courses • With this option, the Client can download the courses without LMS tracking features. • When working “offline,” without access to the Internet, the course will load as text.

  14. Statistics • The National Center for Educational Statistics concludes that Incorporating documents and teaching that requires synthesizing information is necessary to improve literacy. • Giving transitioning offenders the opportunity to practice using, reading and understanding the documents and real-life situations will provide experience and, ultimately, confidence to interact in society.
