Modern IM as we know it today began to grow in popularity in the mid to late 1990s, starting with ICQ, which identified users by a unique number instead of a user name. AIM and other IM programs followed. Now, instant messaging programs are more versatile as ever, with advanced features like video chat, voicemail, and group IM sessions.
