  2. Personal Narrative • It is human nature to want to share what happens in our lives. Many magazines and books contain stories written by people who want to share their meaningful life experiences. You can share an experience by writing a personal narrative

  3. Personal Narrative • Topic: A personal essay sharing the details of a specific event or time in your life, emphasizing what you learned from the experience. • Papers will be graded using the following criteria:

  4. Stimulating ideas • Focuses on a specific experience or event • Presents an engaging picture of the people and action involved. • Contains specific details • Uses figurative language (simile, metaphor, personification, and/or hyperbole)

  5. Logical Organization • Includes a clear beginning that pulls the reader into the essay • Presents ideas in an organized manner • Uses transitions to link sentences and paragraphs • 5

  6. BE SPECIFIC!! Original Word Choice • Contains specific nouns, vivid verbs, and colorful modifiers • Uses sensory details that place reader in story spicy Crab Bay Jazz Club slipped juicy briar-headed grabbed forest green smoky evening pierced silky bone white huddled The Nerd Herd a mean girls party yelped BE SPECIFIC!!

  7. Effective Sentence Style • Flows smoothly from one idea to the next • Shows variation in sentence structure and length NO: The dog was unhappy. He lost his ball. YES: Brooding over his lost ball, the dog sank into depression.

  8. Grammar • Commas must be used correctly • The paper must have accurate pronoun -- antecedent agreement. • The paper must have subject – verb agreement. s. > V. A. < P.

  9. Correct Accurate Copy • Typed and double spaced • Correct heading and format • Include edited brainstorm • Include edited rough draft • Papers due: Oct. 23

Brainstorming • List stories from your life where you learned a valuable lesson or experienced something you will never forget. • Examples: A favorite birthday, an accident, an important decision, an unlikely friendship…. • Brainstorming “lessons” • School • Parents • God • Community • Personal • What lesson have you learned?

  11. Brainstorming • Answer the following questions… • 1. What was the setting? • 2. How old were you? • 3. Who was with you? • 4. What were the circumstances?

  12. Chronological List • Write a chronological list of the events in your story • Look at your list above and write a word next to each event that indicates the emotion you were feeling at each point of your story.

  13. Elaborate • Setting • Use concrete sensory details to create effective images of the sights, sounds and smells of the place you are describing.

  17. Elaborate • Briefly describe yourself and the other people in your story. What are their ages at the time of the event? Can you remember what each person was doing and/or wearing? What were their reactions to you and your reactions to them? Did they have any noticeable mannerisms or habits?

  18. Elaborate • People • Who was involved in the events? What did those people look like? What did they do and say? Use sensory details to describe actions and gestures. Use dialogue to show each person’s personality

  19. Elaborate • Thoughts and Feelings • What did I think and feel as the events unfolded? Use interior monologue (thinking out loud) to share your thoughts with readers.
