  2. Founder • The founder of Confucianism was KǒngFūzǐ aka Confucius • Born 551 died 479 B.C.E. • He was born in the state of Lu, and lived during the Chou dynasty. • He was a Chinese philosopher

  3. Beliefs of Confucianism • Li: Ritual, propriety, and etiquette • Hsiao: Love and have respect for family, parents, and children, but especially for your parents. (Filial Piety) • Xin: Righteousness, honesty and trustworthiness • Jen: Benevolence, humaneness towards others; the highest Confucian virtue • Chung: loyalty to the state, etc. • Yin/Yang – balance between opposite forces

  4. Confucius Practices • Birth: T’ ai-shen (spirit of the fetus). The spirit protects the mother from harm. • When you have reached maturity you are served chicken. • The six stages of marriage: Proposal, Engagement, Dowry, Procession, marriage and reception, Morning after. • Death: many ceremonies are performed

  5. Rituals • The main rituals were marriage and death.

  6. The Role of Women • In Confucian society women were always subordinate to men. • Confucians believed this to be the natural order of the world. • The most respected women were those who self-sacrificingly served their families and husbands.

  7. Major Texts • The five classics were: • Book of Songs • Book of History • Spring and Autumn Annals • Book of Ritual • I Ching (Book of Changes) • The four books: • Analects • the Great Learning • the Doctrine of the Mean • the Mencius

  8. Promotion and Spread of Confucianism • Confucius tried to spread his teachings by gaining political power; however, he was not tremendously successful • In the end, it was his disciples who really spread the religion by writing down his teachings • Between 25-220 CE, it became the official orthodoxy of China • Took root in Korea by 400 CE

  9. Contact With Other Religions • Competed with Buddhism and Daoism after the collapse of the Han dynasty (after 220 CE) because while Confucianism was more for the elite/government, Buddhism and Daoism appealed to the lower class • All three religions influenced each other and blended into Chinese culture

  10. Quotations • “Respect yourself and others will respect you.” – Confucius (551-479 BCE) • “To be able under all circumstances to practice five things constitutes perfect virtue; these five things are gravity, generosity of soul, sincerity, earnestness and kindness.” – Confucius (551-479 BCE)
