Charlie Chaplin, English motion-picture actor, director, producer, and composer, one of the most creative artists in film history, who first achieved worldwide fame through his performances in silent films. His full name was Sir Charles Spencer Chaplin. Born in London, as a child Chaplin appeared in music hall and pantomime performances. In 1910 he toured the United States with a pantomime troupe and decided to remain in the country. Chaplin first appeared on the screen in 1914 with the Keystone Film Company of American director Mack Sennett. In Kid Auto Races at Venice (1914), wearing baggy pants, enormous shoes, and a bowler hat and carrying a bamboo cane, he originated his world-famous character, the Tramp. He played this classic role in more than 70 films during his career. He was associated later with the Essanay Film Company, the Mutual Film Company, and the First National Film Company. In 1918 his own studio in Hollywood, California, was completed. During these years Chaplin gradually developed the tramp character from a jaunty, slapstick stereotype into the compassionate human figure that came to be loved by audiences throughout the world. In 1919 he helped found the United Artists Corporation, with which he was associated until 1952. Important pictures Chaplin produced, directed, and starred in include The Kid (1921), The Pilgrim (1923), The Gold Rush (1925), The Circus (1928), City Lights (1931), Modern Times (1936), The Great Dictator (1940), Monsieur Verdoux (1947), Limelight (1952), and A King in New York (1957). Chaplin wrote, directed, and played in A Countess from Hong Kong (1967). He also composed background music for most of his films. In the late 1940s and early 1950s Chaplin was criticized for his leftist political views. As a result, he left the United States in 1952 and established permanent residence in Switzerland. In 1972 he briefly returned to the United States to receive several tributes, among them a special Academy Award for his contributions to the film industry. He was knighted in 1975.

  6. Orson Welles was born on 6th May 1915 in Wisconsin, far smaller than the 6’1” overweight man he would become. His parents were both successful in two very different careers: his father Richard Welles was an inventor and his mother Beatrice Welles was an accomplished concert pianist. However, their relationship did not mimic this success and when he was just six Orson’s parents separated. If not distressing enough to a child so young, Orson lost his (reportedly very beautiful) mother to hepatitis aged nine. Then only three years later at twelve his father also died after taking Orson on a world trip. His love for the arts became apparent at The Todd School were he had the opportunity to write and perform his own plays, and also the place were he produced his first film, a four minute short. This was a big turnaround for Welles who up until now, like most children, had disliked school. However, he did not choose to continue in education and after graduating he declined offers of college places to chase a career in the theatre. Unfortunately he had difficulty in getting a break, but finally did in 1934 through connections. Welles made his stage debut in New York playing Tybalt in Romeo and Juliet. Welles is best known however for the film Citizen Kane (1941) still today quoted as the “best film ever made” in which he proved his brilliance behind the camera as well as in front of it. Taking on the job of writing, producing, directing and starring in the film certainly paid off for Welles in what was only his third film to direct.

  10. Undoubtedly one of the most influential film personalities in the history of film, Steven Spielberg is perhaps Hollywood's best known director and one of the wealthiest filmmakers in the world. Spielberg has countless big-grossing, critically acclaimed credits to his name, as producer, director and writer. He was born in Cincinnati, Ohio in 1946. He went to California State University Long Beach, but dropped out to pursue his entertainment career. He gained notoriety as an uncredited assistant editor on the classic western Wagon Train (1957). Among his early directing efforts were Battle Squad (1961), which combined World War II footage with footage of an airplane on the ground that he makes you believe is moving. Spielberg's first major directorial effort was The Sugarland Express (1974), with Goldie Hawn, a film that marked him as a rising star. It was his next effort, however, that made him an international superstar among directors.

  14. Timothy William Burton was born August 25, 1958 in Burbank. Tim Burton is famous for being a brilliant director, producer, artist, photographer, poet, writer, and designer. Burton's first job was as an animator for Disney. He worked on films ‘The Fox and the Hound’ (1981) and ‘The Black Cauldron’ (1985), but had some creative differences from his colleagues. But Disney recognized his talent, and gave him the go ahead to make ‘Vincent’ (1982), it’s an animated short film about a boy who wanted to be just like Vincent Price. Narrated by Price himself, the short film was a critical success and won several awards.
