  2. How about now? And now? Lighting and mise en scene communicate a huge amount of meaning... STARTER: what does the symbol suggest?

  3. Remind me... This term literally translates to mean Miseenscene To put onstage Theplacing of a scene This term is used to describe those visual aspects that appear within a single shot.

  4. Give me suggestions... A brightly lit scene could suggest what about the characters or the plot? A happy event or happy characters This is typical because bright lighting suggests the director wants us (and the characters) to see everything giving us knowledge, power and freedom

  5. Give me suggestions... A mysterious event or characters Innocent/ clueless characters confusion A dimly lit scene could suggest This is typical because dim lighting suggests the director wants us (and the characters) NOT to see everything taking away our knowledge, power and freedom

  6. One more thing... Characters cast in shadows or in dark colours are the ones who are lacking in power, knowledge or freedom. Characters in the light, shown in light colours are the ones who have power/ freedom etc. Look at relationships on screen...

  7. Task 1 : read Ii as a class and answer the following questions: • What type of character is Tybalt? Give a quotation to support your answer. 2. What type of character is Benvolio? Give a quotation to support your answer. 3. what ‘level’ or status do you think they have with their own households (Benvolio Montague and Tybalt Capulet)? 4. what, if anything suggests that these characters are opposites on many levels?

  8. How is each one introduced (what happens when we first see them)? What does this suggest about the character? Task 2: watch a clip from the Baz Baz Luhrmann version of Romeo and Juliet (made in 1996) observing the following characters. Benvolio Tybalt

  9. Task 2: THREE GROUPSWatch a clip again observing the one character you have been given and make notes

  10. Task 3: FOUR GROUPSas a group focused on one character, discuss and share notes to complete the table.
