Health and Wellbeing Holy Cross is a Health promoting school. We participate in Tasty Tuesday, Watery Wednesday and Fruity Friday initiatives. At an assembly, the Health Committee demonstrated healthy types of food to put into our packed lunch boxes. We presented examples of healthy packed lunch boxes at the Parents Evening. Mrs O’Neil runs cookery classes. We learn to make healthy food. We also planted herbs and fruit then used them to make tasty soup and jam. We had new games painted in our playground, we all enjoy keeping active and healthy.
Gardening Club • Our Gardening Club is run by Mrs Sinclair. Garden Club members keep our grounds looking beautiful by planting and taking care of our flower beds. These attract mini beasts to our playground. • The Gardening Club has developed a compost heap. We put leftover food such as apple cores, orange peel and tea bags in the compost heap. Everything rots down and can be dug into the soil to make it richer. • We enjoy using our school grounds for outdoor learning.
Energy It is important that we save energy and help save the planet. Our Holy Cross Power Rangers meet with Mr Kelly our Janitor and write down the exact amount of gas and electricity the school is using on a monthly basis. The energy chart is filled in so that we can see how much gas and electricity is being used and how we can use this information to make improvements. Simple ways to save energy are: Turning off taps Switching off lights when you’re not in the room. Turning off computers and smart boards when not in use. Displaying energy labels at light switches and taps to remind everyone not to waste energy. Our Power Rangers will undertake random checks on classes to make sure lights, computers taps are turned off at break times and lunch times and at the end of the day. They will record their findings and let you know how well you are doing.
Biodiversity • If we have lots of mini beasts in our school grounds then this will attract more birds. If you take away trees and hedges the mini beasts will die and the birds will have little to eat. • Mrs Sinclair and our Garden Club members, have planted shrubs to attract mini beasts to our school grounds. • P5 have made a wormery and placed a spiders web to attract minibeasts. They have also put up bird boxes and bird feeders to attract more birds to our school grounds. They will monitor the amount of birds visiting our school grounds.
Waste Minimisation • Some of the things we use every day can be used again and again … we call this recycling. Recycling cuts down on waste and saves energy. We all have a tray in class with a label saying Recycled Paper. This tray can be used to store scraps of paper, old news letters, used envelopes etc and we can use these pieces of paper again during wet plays. • In Holy Cross we participated in the Rag Bag Collection. We brought in lots of clothes, shoes and books that we were no longer using. The Rag bags were weighed and we made over £250 in our Rag Bag Collection. This money is used to buy school equipment for us and to fund trips to the park. Also, the clothes in the Rag bags are reused by needy people. • Christmas cards are reused to make new cards to raise funds for charitable organisations.
