  1. International Steering Committee on Multimedia Environmental Modeling (ISCMEM) Annual Meeting NRC HQ, Rockville MD November 28, 2011 US EPA ORDPATHFINDER INNOVATION PROJECT Global to Genome (G2G)

  2. Outline • Pathfinder project • Global to Genome • Team G2G • Problem and Promise • Process and Products • Partnerships • Progress • Open Discussion

  3. ORD Initiative:Pathfinder Innovation Project (PIP) • Paul Anastas’ set-aside in Fall 2010 to stimulate new ORD research • Emphasis on innovation and sustainability • 1-year seed project • Competition announced in October 2010 with rapid time frame • Proposals submitted directly to the HQ Innovation Team, then reviewed by one of three external panels of highly-regarded scientific, innovation, and sustainability experts • 117 proposals and > 200 scientists participated • 12 Awards in January 31, 2011 • Based on recommendations from the three external panels • G2G considered a “Game Changer”

  4. Global to Genome (G2G) Goal: Specification of a Computational Platform for Agency-wide, Seamless Data Flow and Computational Modeling in Support of Health, Ecological, and Climate Risk Characterizations

  5. G2G: Semantics! • Innovation is intentionally a high risk endeavor • Specifications ONLY – we are NOT building the system • Implementation in out years • Support to RAP projects and models • Technology versus terminology! • Scope: Modular – not a behemoth system • Expected to evolve with time • Cover across all of EPA • Provide public access

  6. Team G2G Members across several ORD centers and labs • NCEA: Lyle Burgoon, Annie Jarabek, and David Miller • NHEERL: Rory Conolly, Stephen Edwards, and William LeFew • NERL: Michael Breen, Rocky Goldsmith, and Cecilia Tan • OSIM: David Lyons

  7. Critical Peer-review Partners • Across Agency • OAR/OAQPS; OSWER, OPPT, OW, OEI • NHSRC • Regional offices • External stakeholders • Professional societies (SOT, SETAC, ISES, SRA, iEMSs…) • Academia • Private sector

  8. G2G: Central Role in AdvancingNew Research Area Programs Source: P. Preuss, “ORD Innovation” to Agency Scientific Advisory Board (SAB) and Board of Scientific Counselors (BOSC), June 29, 2011.

  9. CSS Dashboards G2G: Central Role in AdvancingNew Research Area Programs ACE Modeling/ Decision Support SSWR G2G SHC Decision Analysis & Support

  10. G2G: Problem and Promise

  11. GIS Physicochemical Data Toxicicity / Health Effects Data Example: Data Streams Required in Risk Assessment Transport & Transformation Model(s) Dosimetry Model(s) Response Model(s) Dose-response Analyses Cost:Benefit Evaluations Exposure Model(s) Exposure Assessment Management Options Risk Assessment Adverse Outcome Analyses Ecotoxicological Effects Data

  12. G2G: Process Several simultaneous, iterative steps: • Scope:Stakeholder solicitation of needs, applications, and available model inventory • Refine: Specifications for integration with emphasis on • Being user friendly • Ease of portability • Public access • Review:Critical peer-review partners to continue to input and refine specifications • Review of recommendations • SOT CCT Workshop in May 2012

  13. Example Interview Agenda • 8:00 – 9:00 pm G2G Overview briefing • Overview of the day's schedule • Background on the G2G project • Discussion on our interview process • How to stay abreast of our project • 9:00 – 3:00 pm Individual interviews • (45 min each) • 3:00 – 3:30 pm G2G Team meeting / summary prep • 3:30 – 4:00 pm Exit briefing

  14. G2G: Progress • Interviews began in FY12 • NCEA RTP completed • NERL and NCCT underway • NHEERL is this week (Nov 30 and Dec 1) • Remaining interviews will take through April 2012 • All ORD labs and centers • All program offices • All regions • DRAFT recommendations updated each time as we analyze feedback

  15. SOT CCT WorkshopContemporary Concepts in Toxicology • International, co-sponsored by SETAC, ISES, SRA, iEMSs, FDA NCTR, DOE PNNL, DOD ACE, USGS, NRC…. • May 8 -11, 2012 at EPA RTP facility • DRAFT G2G recommendations to be externally vetted • Focus on interoperability and multi-scale data integration • Poster session opportunity to highlight research and demonstrate data integration projects

  16. G2G: Products • Requirements document: Systems design description for subsequent implementation • Demonstration: Utility and impact on assessment approaches and operational efficiency • Case studies • Two hazardous air pollutants (vinyl chloride and chlorine) to link to virtual tissues • Chlorpyrifos • Discuss needs for broader implementation to other agents (e.g., PM) and media (e.g., water, soil) to support sustainability emphasis across ORD research programs • Forum article in Toxicological Sciences

  17. Additional Considerations: Culture Change • G2G = Great idea! • Technically challenging, but the social engineering required may be even more formidable: • Data sharing • Collaborative development versus end-product interfacing • Iterative, “modeling mentality” • Implementation in research as well as regulatory context

  18. Global Discussion • Project Page : https://kestrel.rtpnc.epa.gov/scidata/?page_id=507 • Updates page: https://kestrel.rtpnc.epa.gov/scidata/?cat=16
