On the Ground • Get the current ATIS or have the weather • Clearance Delivery- be ready for the clearance • Ground Control- Who, Where, and What • Carry an airport diagram and use it! • Limit distractions while taxiing out • If you don’t know where you are or where you are going…STOP and ask • Readback ALL hold short instructions • Every runway crossing will be specific *

Radar Services • VFR Flight Following: WHO WHERE WHAT • Just the Facts! Limit extra verbiage • Radar services for VFR- based on workload • Don’t get complacent- SEE and AVOID • ACTIVELY LISTEN to the frequency

Class C Entry Requirements • Operating transponder with Mode C • Radio Communications • Controller MUST use your call sign • No clearance required • Operating into/out of Class C without a transponder can be coordinated with ATC
Class D Entry Requirements • Operating radio – unless authorized by ATC • Establish communications including call sign • Watch out- most Class D airspaces revert to Class E after the tower closes • Name the one Class D airport WITHOUT an ATCT • VUO – Vancouver Pearson 4 miles from PDX
Communications • Student pilots- let us know • Never leave the frequency without coordination • Phraseology requirements for ATC • ALL HOLD SHORT INSTRUCTIONS • Call sign with your readback • Use standard phraseology- that is what ATC is listening for • LISTEN to the frequency
Arriving at Larger Airports • Wake Turbulence issues • Airport signage may not be user- friendly for smaller general aviation aircraft • Large, unfamiliar layout, especially at night • Close attention must be paid to controller instructions • Little time for second clearances • If you have questions ---- ASK!!!!
After Landing • Clear the runway – “dash across the dashes” • Ask for progressive taxi instructions • Limit distractions while on any movement area • Don’t forget to close your VFR flight plan!
