Welcome to a New Beginning CG -100 College Success Strategies BY Michael Davis
Successful VS Struggling students Successful Struggling Accept the victim role, believing that external forces determine the outcomes and experiences of their lives Use Victim language, rejecting personal responsibility by blaming, complaining and excusing Make decisions carelessly, letting the future to happen by chance rather than by choice • Adopt the creator role, believing that their choices create the outcomes and experiences of their lives • Master creator language, accepting personal responsibility for their results • Make wise decisions, consciously designing the future they want
Stimulus Choice VICTIM CREATOR Seeking solutions Taking action Trying something new RESULT Often achieves goals • Blaming • Complaining • Excusing • Repeating behavior RESULT Seldom achieves goals
Adopting The Creator Role The essence of personal responsibility is responding wisely to life’s opportunities and challenges, rather than waiting passively for luck or other people to make the choices for us.
Victims and Creators Victims Creators People who change their beliefs and their behaviors to create the best results When people keep doing the same thing they’ve been doing even when it doesn't work
Responsibility and Choice Responsibility Choice It is your choice if you choose do it or not Remember it is your choice no oneelses It is up to yourself to have responsibility to do the what needs to be done
Mastering Creator Language • Inner Critic: This is the internal voice that judges us inadequate • Inner Defender: Judges others • Inner Guide: This is the wise inner voice that seeks the best of any situation
The Language of Responsibility • Ownership: of your actions • Make an Action Plan; and stick with it
The Wise Choice Process • What’s my present situation? • How would I like my situation to be? • What are my possible choices? • What is the likely outcome of each possible choice? • Which choice(s) will I commit to doing? • When and how will I evaluate my plane?
Personal Responsibility You have to take responsibility for your own actions It is up to you to do your own stuff not anyone else You are responsible for you own life and actions
Believe in Yourself Stop thinking you can’t do it Stop thinking you are not smart Stop thinking you are not college material. START THINKKING YOU CAN!!!!!!! YOU CAN DO IT YOU ARE SMART YOU ARE COLLEGE MATERIAL
