West African art, culture and civilisation • Prior to the arrival of the Europeans, West African people were skilled in medicine, mathematics and astronomy. Art, learning and technology flourished. • By the 15th Century there were great empires and Kingdoms in the east and west, following their own philosophical and religious beliefs. • Crafts people produced a wide range of sophisticated objects for daily and ceremonial use. • The skills and culture of pre-slavery Africa undermine misconceptions about the people who were sold into slavery.
