  3. After jotting your ideas down, share your ideas with the rest of the class. • Are there any similarities? Task 1 Working in groups: “What 5 words come to mind when you think of Africa?”

  4. Using the outline of the map on the right, label the countries that enslaved men and women were captured? • Why do you think these countries were chosen? Task 2 What do I know about Africa?

  5. West African art, culture and civilisation • Prior to the arrival of the Europeans, West African people were skilled in medicine, mathematics and astronomy. Art, learning and technology flourished. • By the 15th Century there were great empires and Kingdoms in the east and west, following their own philosophical and religious beliefs. • Crafts people produced a wide range of sophisticated objects for daily and ceremonial use. • The skills and culture of pre-slavery Africa undermine misconceptions about the people who were sold into slavery.
