Forensic Psychology Polygraphs
25 MINUTES • Finish the packet from yesterday • This will involve working quickly & efficientlyfor the ENTIRE time. • Timer will be up on the board for you
Polygraphs • Intend to catch lies by measuring skin responses • BP, HR, sweat, breathing • Controversial & contradictory results • Guilty Knowledge Test (GKT): higher reactions when unpublished info is shown to criminals
Today’s Lesson: How to Detect Lies! • Disclaimer: NONE OF THESE are going to work 100% of the time. These are general trends.
Body Language • Limited hand movements • Avoid eye contact • Hands touch face, throat, eyes & mouth • Will not likely touch their chest with the palm of their hand
Emotional Gestures • Timing is off between emotions/words • Ex: “I love it!” then a smile after • Gestures don’t match verbal statements • Ex: Frowning when saying “I love you!” • Expressions limited to mouth movements, not whole face
Interactions/Reactions • Defensive • Uncomfortable facing questioner – may turn away • May place objects between you
Speech • Indirect statements • Fill in silence • A statement with a contraction is more likely to be truthful: I didn’t do it > I did not do it • Monotonous
Microexpressions • Involuntary facial movements reveal hidden emotions • http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=EXm6YbXxSYk • Anyone could be trained to find them, but some people are naturals • https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JiGVKl_ieZQ
