This year's winning designs, announced in May, showcased remarkable presence, shopability and strong merchandising ethic. First place went to Dale Potts of Ball State University. Other winners were Jennifer Jarosik, University of Nebraska (2nd place); Amy Moore, Texas Tech University (3rd place); Kate Allen, California State University (Honorable mention); and Tim Huang, California State University (Honorable mention). The task was to create a prototype design for a 5,120-sq.-ft. "Northwest Fresh" gourmet food and wine store that would anchor a shopping venue. Entrants were asked to include a demonstration area, a fresh food area and a wine shop in their designs.This year's judges were Vernon Trevellyan, a professor with the Art Institute of Seattle; Pak Koong, an architect with Mithun Architects (ISP Seattle, vice president); Gaylon Goodwin with Sears Construction (ISP Seattle, president); Cris Gunter, principal and architect with Two Hats retail design firm; Tom Costantini, a planner with Bon-Macy's; and Carmen Spoffard, planner/designer (ISP Seattle treasurer) and construction administrator consultant to FDS. —Sree Roy, Associate Editor Display & Design Ideas Magazine, July 2004 issue (Volume 16, no. 7), page 10. www.ddimagazine.com
