From Internet to NGI in HK • .hk domain introduced to Hong Kong in 1989 • Internet started in the universities (HARNET) in 1991 • HK has the advantage of dense population, good communication network and low cost fibre connection across the Pacific to US • HK has benefited from wide Internet adoption in the last 20 years • However, HK is lagging behind quite a lot in NGI development
Hong Kong Party ofHK - Guangdong Forum on NGI • Set up in 2006 by HK & GD governments • Dr. Ng Nam (Director of HKU Computer Center) as convener • To jointly promote NGI advancements, implementation & application • Regular exchange seminars continued on half-yearly basis for about 2+ years • No activities since then due to change of government personnel on both side
Founding of HKNGIS • The Hong Kong Next Generation Internet Society (HKNGIS) was incorporated in January 2009 as a non-profit-making professional body • The primary objective is to promote the development and use of the Next Generation Internet in Hong Kong • HKNGIS had been granted the status of a non-taxable entity in Hong Kong in July 2009 • HK Party of HK-GD NGI Forum as members
Mission of HKNGIS • The mission of HKNGIS is to promote the Next-Generation-Internet (NGI) development in Hong Kong, and to provide a forum for the dissemination and appreciation of technical information relating to NGI and the sharing of experience in developing NGI infrastructure and applications for the benefit of members of the Association and the general public

HKNGIS Initiatives • Exchange visits to testing facilities of major network and communication companies • Coming seminar to promote NGI / IPv6 in the education sector, including schools (9 March 2012) • HK NGI Test-bed (being studied)
The Test-bed • To allow academics and researchers in industry to joint force in developing innovative NGI and IOT applications • High-speed NGI exchange to link up universities (HARNET), research & technology organizations, e.g ASTRI, medical institutions, schools, etc. • High-speed connectivity to international research networks • High speed connectivity to neighbouring cities in Shenzhen and/or Guangzhou, through CNGI • IPv6 based
