Characteristics of Arthropods • Exoskeletons (which are made out of a protein called chitin) • Jointed Appendages • Segmented bodies • The body has three main sections: head, thorax (middle part), and abdomen (butt) • Legs & wings are attached to the thorax • No backbone • Sexual reproduction • Live on land, water, and air • Able to move [ not sessile ] • Has a mouth • Eats anything with living tissue • Complex animal • All arthropods have at least six legs • The mouth of an insect is called a mandible
Weird facts • Insects sense touch, vibration, and wind movement using tiny hairs called sensilla. • Sensilla are also made out of chitin. • Sensilla are really sensitive, and that's how flies know when your trying to swat them. • Insects have over 1000 sensilla on their body. • Arthropods are a highly successful group of animals—they account for over three quarters of all currently known living and fossil organisms. • Most arthropods lay eggs. Scorpions are the exception to this rule, they incubate their eggs internally and give birth to live young.
