Washington Irving • He was born in NYC on April 3, 1783 and died November 28, 1839 • He was influenced by English writers like Joseph Addison, Oliver Goldsmith, and Sir Walter Scott. • He was the first American writer to earn International reputation for his work. • He was best known for his short stories: • Rip Van Winkle • The Legend of Sleepy Hollow (The Sketch Book)
James Fenimore Cooper • He was born in Burlington, NJ on September 15, 1789 and died on September 14, 1851 • He was one of the first Americans to have a wide ranged international audience. • Best known for his Leatherstocking Tales • Many of the elements from his novels have been used to develop Today’s Western films

William Cullen Bryant • He was born in Cummington, Massachusetts on November 3, 1794 and he died June 12 1878. • He was a journalist, literary critic and public speaker, but more importantly he was the first significant poet in the 19th century. • When he was a newspaper editor he spoke out against slavery and political corruption • He used his “gift” of writing to showcase his intense love of nature during the romantic period.
In 1815 he became a lawyer in Massachusetts. • In 1825 he went from law to literature and left New England for NYC, • He edited the New York Evening Post for 50 years and made it one of the most noteworthy liberal newspapers. • His most famous poems were “To a Waterfowl” and “Thanatopsis” • At first Thanatopsis was rejected for publication because they didn’t think any American could produce such a work. • Some of his best poems were wrote in NYC: • A Forest Hymn (1825) • The Prairies (1833) • The Death of Lincoln (1865)
Thanatopsis • It is a blank verse death lyric in which death is portrayed as the inevitable absorption into nature. • It is a very important romantic piece which has a metrical form, graveyard theme, a melancholy tone, and panoramic imagery.
