What is S.U.R.F.? • SURF started in 1992 with an NSF grant to UAF • In 1994, State of Arkansas continued the program with central administration • In 2005, ADHE began administering SURF
What does S.U.R.F. do? • Develops undergraduate academic research at Arkansas colleges & universities • Funds student in-depth research projects • Funds faculty mentors to help students learn and grow
Distinguish Yourself • All disciplines are eligible and encouraged to apply • Science, engineering and mathematics majors may research a basic science topic • A philosophy major may explore an area of bioethics • An art major might sculpt a major project • A nursing student could examine a clinical problem or survey a patient population
Am I Eligible? Are/Do you: • a U.S. citizen or permanent resident alien? • enrolled as a full-time student? • enrolled in a baccalaureate degree? • have at least 30 semester credit hours completed? • have a minimum cumulative 3.25 GPA? • have a tenured or full-time faculty member to serve as a mentor?
Show Me the Money!!! Maximum award by category: $1,250 Student Stipend* + $ 750 Student Travel + $ 750 Mentor Award + $1,250 Institution Match $4,000 Total SURF Award
Student Stipends Spring only = $ 625 max stipend Spring & Summer = $1,250 max stipend Spring & Fall = $1,250 max stipend Spring, Summer & Fall = $1,250 max stipend
Application Checklist • Cover page, signed by mentor and university official (in RTT Office) • One page summary of proposed research • Description of proposed research (5 page max, doubled spaced) • Budget and budget justification forms • Mentor form and mentor’s resume (2 page max) • Student form and student’s resume (2 page max) • Current transcript and list of current semester classes • Letter of support from mentor • Two letters of recommendation from faculty members • SURF application form and 2 copies of entire packet
The Wow Factor • Construct your proposal description: - How will you be involved? - How many hours per week will you devote to your project? - Include a time schedule for your funding period - Include expected month-to-month accomplishments - Devote perhaps 25% of your proposal to background information regarding your project Past samples: http://awards.uark.edu/643.php
Proposal Scoring cont. *Evaluation criteria may vary with the area of study. Criteria may include: • Feasibility – is the project reasonable with available facilities & resources? • Is the project valuable to your field of study? • Is the project difficult enough to challenge you? • Will you learn skills that you can use in other research activities? • Are there other factors to consider (such as, student from a group under-represented in the area of study)?

When is it due? Wednesday, October 18, 2017, 5:00 pm Submit to Research and Technology Transfer (RTT) on the Library 6th Floor. Proposals will be reviewed by RTT, signed and submitted to ADHE by November 1, 2017.
