Topic: Weather and the preterit Essential questions: How do I talk about the weather and how do I discuss things that happened?
The weather • Weather in Spanish is an interesting concept because most of the time you use the verb “hacer”. • You ask with these questions: • ¿Quétiempohace? Or ¿Cómoestá el clima? Or ¿Quetal el tiempo/el clima?
The weather • You answer with any of the following • Hacebuen/mal tiempo. (The weather is good/bad.) • Hacecalor/frío/sol. (It’s hot/cold/sunny.) • Hace ____ grados. Está a _____ grados. (It is ____ degrees.) • Estánublado. (It’s cloudy) • Llueve./Estálloviendo. (It’s raining.) • Nieva./Estánevando. (It’s snowing)

The preterit • This year you have learned how to express what you do (present tense), what you are doing right now (present progressive) and what you are going to do (ir+a+infinitive) • Take a moment to write the present tense verb endings on your worksheet. • The preterit is a new tense to learn – it is used to state what you did or what happened. It is the past tense
The preterit • Like the present tense, to conjugate the preterit, you first take off the ending (ar, er, ir) and then replace it with a new set of endings. There are two sets – one for –ar verbs and one for –er/-ir verbs.
The preterit • For –ar verbs, the endings are: • Yo: -é • Tú: -aste • Él/ella/Ud: -ó • Nosotros: -amos • Ellos/ellas/Uds: -aron • Hablar: hablé, hablaste, habló, hablamos, hablaron • Take a moment to fill in the –ar verb endings on your worksheet.
SOME SPELLING CHANGES: • In some verbs, the “yo” form has some spelling changes to maintain the right sound. • Verbs that end in “gar” in the yo form of the preterit will end in –gué (the only way to spell the sound “geh” in Spanish is “gue”) • Jugar: jugué, jugaste, jugó, jugamosjugaron • Verbs that end in “car” in the yo form of the preterit will in end in –qué (the only way to spell the sound “kay” in Spanish is “que”) • Tocar: toqué, tocaste, tocó, tocamos, tocaron • Verbs that end in “zar” in the yo form of the preterit will end in –cé (you can’t have “ze” combination in Spanish) • Empezar: empecé, empezaste, empezó, empezamos, empezaron
The preterit • For –er and –ir verbs, the endings are: • Yo: -í • Tú: -iste • Él/ella/Ud: -ió • Nosotros: -imos • Ellos/ellas/Uds: -ieron • Comer: comí, comiste, comió, comimos, comieron • Take a moment to fill in the –er/-ir verb endings on your worksheet.
Irregular verbs • There are many irregular verbs in the preterit. You will learn four. They are in Group 1, the one-syllable verbsthat don’t require accents. • D/V • Dar (to give…irregular because it acts like an –er verb and it has no accents) di, diste, dio, dimos, dieron • Ver (to see…irregular only because it has NO accents) vi, viste, vio, vimos, vieron • Fu/Fu • Ir (to go) • Ser (to be) • fui, fuiste, fue, fuimos, fueron
