  2. Conestoga Wagon • A large covered wagon that westward-bound settlers used to carry themselves and their belongings; the wheels were 6-10 inches wide, canvas cloth was stretched over wood staves, and the ends of the wagon bed were higher to keep goods from falling out.

  3. Toll • A fee charged for the use of a road

  4. Turnpike • A road that travelers had to pay a fee (tool) to use: the swinging barrier called a pike was turned when the toll was paid to allow access

  5. Stagecoach • A large covered wagon that carried passengers, luggage, and mail along the roads

  6. Navigable • Suitable for a boat to sail on; able to be traveled

  7. Ford • A shallow place to cross a stream or river

  8. Ferry • A large boat used to carry people and cargo across a river

  9. Canal • A waterway that joins one river or body of water to another
