4. L’imparfait • Imparfait means “imperfect”. The imperfect tense is a past tense that indicates an action that: • Did not have a specific beginning or end ___________________________________ • Was habitual (meaning you did it on a regular basis, something you used to do) __________________________________ • Was going on when another action/event happened ___________________________________ Il neigeait beaucoup. La neige scintillait. Quand mon père était jeune, il jouait au football américain. Je dormais quand un voleur est entré dans la maison.

5. L’imparfait • The imperfect can be translated by: • “used to” + an infinitive: Je jouais au tennis. (I used to play tennis.) • “was” + verb (in “ing” form) Je parlais avec ma mère quand tu as téléphoné. (I was talking with my mother when you called.)

11. Irregularities • There are a few irregular verbs that have irregular imperfect forms. The endings always stay the same, but the verb stem (the nous form) may be irregular. j’étais

Irregularities • Other verbs that are actually regular in the imperfect may look strange, however, you should follow the normal rules for formation. • For verbs ending in –ger (such as manger, nager or voyager), you must remember to add an “e” to the present tense nous form to keep the soft “g” sound. Je mangais? Je mangeais? Tu nagais? Tu nageais? Il voyagait? Il voyageait?

13. Irregularities • ATTENTION! Do the nous and vous forms of –ger verbs need a “e” the way all other forms do? Why or why not? • The nous and vous forms of –ger verbs do NOT need the “e” to keep the “g” sound soft BECAUSE the imperfect ending starts with an “i”, which is a soft vowel (making the “g” soft already)! 14. Irregularities • For verbs ending in –ier (such as étudier), remember to keep the “i” in the nous form and then add the ending – even when the ending begins with an “i” resulting in a double “ii” spelling (example: nous étudiions).
