New IAU Constants? • Consensus is yes; Any dissent? • Do we need to define users of Constants vs. users of CBEs? • What accuracy of Constants? • Do we provide fewer decimal places? • Enhances compatibility and longevity • Degrades values • Are the constants published on paper or kept electronic?

  4. How to Maintain CBEs? • Who to talk to at the IAU? • May have allies with SOFA and Cartographic Coordinates WG • Proposal to IAU Division I President (J. Vondrák) • Vondrák find allies in IAU (President of Division III?), begin discussion with IAU General Secretary (K. van der Hucht)

  5. How to Handle Documentation? • Need to provide background information for users • Is it sufficient to provide references? • Does additional information need to be provided in the recommendations?

How Does Electronic Information Play a Role? • Is everything written in the recommendations • Is it acceptable to provide links to electronic information? • While it is unlikely that the Constants will be electronic only, would it be acceptable for CBEs to be electronic only? • If so, what form? • Web page? • Wiki-like resource?

  7. Change in CBEs? • Should we define au and estimate GMS? • Should we define GMS and estimate au? • What are the implications of eliminating k from the list? • Change in W0? • Change of theta in UT1

  8. Reference for Constants? • What level is sufficient for accepting the reference for constants? • Electronic only (personal correspondence)? • Non-refereed proceedings? • Refereed journal only? • Include original reference for value?

  9. RIFA/units? • What is the correct terminology for units? • TDB-like? • TDB-compatible? • TDB-scaled? • Should values for multiple “scaled-quantities?

  10. Additional Information for Constants? • Explicitly say which are primary, derived, etc.?

  11. Meeting at General Assembly? • Call for arranging meetings at the General Assembly is due 1 November. • Do we request meeting? • If so, how long?

What do we do from here? • Reserve room for IAU GA (29 October 2008) • Draft Journées article (1 November 2008) • Draft IAU Recommendations (1 December 2008) • Adopt CBEs as new IAU Constants • Create mechanism for maintaining CBEs • Provide draft recommendations to IAG, IUGG, IERS, others? for comment (1 March 2009) • Provide draft recommendations at IAU Symposium (27 April-1 May 2009) • Submit recommendations to IAU (1 May 2009) • IAU General Assembly (3-14 August 2009)
