46. The Kanizsa Triangle Illusion How many triangles and circles do you see? What do you see below? Created by Italian psychologist Gaetano Kanizsa in 1955, the Kanizsa Triangle is a classic example of illusory contours. A white equilateral triangle can be clearly perceived even though there are no explicit lines or enclosed spaces to indicate such a triangle. The white triangle actually appears brighter than the surrounding white background, even in areas where there is no change in luminance or color. This describes the law of closure, which claims that objects grouped together are seen as a whole. This means that we perceive objects as being whole even when they are incomplete; we ignore gaps and we complete contour lines to form familiar figures and shapes. In the Kanizsa Triangle Illusion we readily perceive three black circles and two triangles, even though there are technically no circles or triangles in the image. If you see President Obama, your brain is employing the law of closure, filling in the details of Obama’s face. The Kanizsa triangle illusion works in reverse as well. www.mastermathmentor.com
47. Anstis’ Contour Illusion You see a bicycle with very light wheels. Click the mouse and let the wheels flicker for about 10 seconds. keeping your gaze on the green cross. Click the mouse again. The wheels will be gone, only to re-emerge several seconds later. If you want to replay the slide, stop the slide show and play from current slide. 48. MIB Illusion This is called Motion-Induced Blindness (MIB). If you steadily focus on the center dot, disappearance occurs more rapidly. Blinking eyes or shifting your gaze brings about reappearance. The same effect occurs with a ring of yellow dots. Sometimes the disappearance follows a path. It varies from person to person. On the rotating image of blue crosses and 3 yellow dots, focus on the flashing red/green spot. 49. Bulging Checkerboard Illusion This is a checkerboard that has a central bulge. Or does it? The tick marks makes the bulge an optical illusion. A slight change in the outlines of the ticks makes the illusionary bulge look like a sphere. www.mastermathmentor.com
50. Cube Illusion Describe what you initially see. Once you have seen the other interpretations, you can mentally flip it from one interpretation to another. But you cannot hold one interpretation longer than approximately 10 seconds. Most people see a cube with a corner missing, Now look at it longer. There are 2 other interpretations of it. 51. Burn-In Illusion You are temporarily burning your retina with the colors of the previous frame. Screensavers were originally designed to help prevent images or text from being burned into older monitors. The monitors and flat panel displays used today no longer suffer from burn-in issues found with older CRT monitors. However, screen savers are still used for their aesthetic value and to password protect a computer when the user is away from the keyboard. Focus on the red dot.
