Radiology Packet 25 Fractures
6 mo female GSD“Samantha” • HX = hit by car
6 mo female GSD“Samantha” • RF • There is cranial luxation of the right coxofemoral joint. • A tiny bone fragment is visible in the right acetabulum. • There is a fracture of the left acetabulum in the cranial 1/3. • There are bilateral distal femoral fractures. • The fracture of the right femur is a Salter-Harris Type I. • The fracture of the left femur is a Salter-Harris Type II. • RD • Right femoral Salter-Harris I fracture • Left femoral Salter-Harris II fracture • Left acetabular fracture • Right coxofemoral luxation • Next • Surgical reduction and stabilization
5 mo old F mix breed dog“Ginger” • HX = presented with acute non-weight bearing lameness on the right hind limb
5 mo old F mix breed dog“Ginger” • RF • Soft tissue swelling surrounds the distal tibia and tarsus. • A fracture of the distal tibial physis is present. • The epiphysis is displaced caudal and lateral and there is angulation of the fracture. • A small bone sliver is noted off the medial malleolus. • A short oblique fracture of the fibula is present involving the distal diaphysis with angulation but no displacement. • RD • Salter-Harris Type I distal tibial fracture • Non-displaced fracture of the distal fibula • Next • Immobilize via cast
9 mo old mix breed dog“J.D.” • HX = HBC
9 mo old mix breed dog“J.D.” • RF • In the lateral view there is a fracture line visible in the distal tibia at the junction of the diaphysis and metaphysis. • In the craniocaudal view there are two fracture lines visible in the medullary cavity of the distal diaphysis. • RD • Greenstick fracture of the distal tibia • Fissure fractures if the distal diaphysis of the tibia • Next • Immobilization via cast
3 yr old MC Doberman“Prince” • HX = presented with acute right hind limb lameness
3 yr old MC Doberman“Prince” • RF • The right femoral head is not within the acetabulum, it is displaced cranial and dorsal. • Small osseous fragments are noted overlying the femoral neck on the VD view. • The right acetabulum appears fractured along the dorsal margin. • RD • Right coxofemoral joint luxation • Next • Surgical reduction of the luxation and fixation of the fracture
2 yr FS Golden Retriever“Mocha” • HX = HBC
2 yr FS Golden Retriever“Mocha” • RF • There are fractures of the distal diaphysis of the radius and ulna. • The fractures are transverse and there are several small bone fragments seen arising from the radial fracture. • There is cranial and lateral displacement of the fracture and the fracture ends are over-riding. • RD • Transverse, comminuted radial fracture • Transverse ulnar fracture • Next • Surgical reduction and stabilization of the radius
6 mo old female DSH“Squeekie” • HX = HBC
6 mo old female DSH“Squeekie” • RF • There is a long oblique fracture of the mid-diaphysis of the left humerus which is caudally displaced. • There is significant over-riding of the fracture. • The surrounding soft tissues are very swollen. • There is a transverse fracture of the mid-diaphysis of the radius and a short oblique fracture of the mid-diaphysis of the ulna. • The fractures are caudolaterally displaced and there is over-riding. • The soft tissues are swollen. • RD • Long oblique fracture of the left humerus • Transverse fractures of the radius and ulna • Next • Surgical reduction and stabilization of the left humerus and left radius
2 yr old MC Lab Retriever“Bud” • HX = gunshot
2 yr old MC Lab Retriever“Bud” • RF • There is a highly comminuted fracture of the diaphysis of the left femur. • Multiple small fracture fragments are present and they are displaced well into the surrounding soft tissues. • Multiple lead fragments are present within the soft tissues. • RD • Comminuted fracture of the left femoral diaphysis • Next • Surgical reduction and stabilization if possible • If not, amputation
1 yr old Mix Breed dog“Trixie” • HX = HBC
1 yr old Mix Breed dog“Trixie” • RF • There is a fracture of the right ilium at the junction of the wing and the body. • Caudal to the fracture the right half of the pelvis is displaced toward the midline. • An irregularly shaped bone fragment seen ventral to the ilial wings in the lateral view is thought to be a fragment arising from the right ilial wing. • There is a comminuted fracture of the left acetabulum. • In the lateral view the femoral head is displaced dorsally through the fractured acetabulum. • There are multiple pelvic floor fractures. • RD • Right ilial fracture • Pelvic floor fractures • Left acetabular fracture • Next • Surgical reduction and stabilization
