  4. Why it’s importantorWhooo Cares? • We are learning about Dramatic Structure to better understand stories through the actions, words, and thoughts of the characters.

  5. Exposition • Explains the background of the story. • Introduces the following: • Setting • Characters (protagonist, antagonist, other agonists) • Point of view (1st or 3rd person?) • Basic situation • Ex. – Mako lives on an island with his family and his dog Afa.

  6. Rising Action • Brings the conflict to the reader’s attention. • What is the problem or struggle the main character has to deal with? • Ex. – Mako has to hunt for Tupa

  7. Climax • This is the turning point of the story where the conflict reaches a high point. • This is where the tension is usually the highest. • Ex. – Mako confronts Tupa.

  8. Falling Action • The events directly following the climax. • How was the conflict resolved? • Ex. – Mako kills Tupa.

  9. Resolution • The final result of the main character’s actions. • Did a character learn a lesson? Did they win or lose anything? • The theme is usually explained here. • Ex. – Mako has avenged his father’s death and won the reward for killing Tupa.
