Lead, Pb, is a metal that can be made in many isotopes, however only 3 of them are stable, with 208Pb being slightly radioactive. • Metallic lead is found in nature but is extremely rare and is found in ore with zinc and silver. Chemical Composition
Physical Characteristics • Lead is a bluish-grey Metal • Lead is also known as being very dull, soft, and malleable. It also has very poor electrical conductivity. • Lead found in the earth is mined and used for industry, such as for piping or paint.
Major Sources • There are many different ways to become exposed to lead. For example, lead can be found in cars where unleaded gasoline isn’t used. • Lead can also come from power plants and other industrial sources. • Indoors, lead paint is an important source of lead, especially in houses where paint is peeling. Lead in old pipes can also be a source of lead in drinking water.
Environmental Damage • When exposed to high amounts of lead, small children can be heavily affected by the lead causing their IQs to be lowered. Also, for adults, their exposure with lead can greatly increase their chances of having heart attacks or strokes.
Health Risk • When exposed to high amounts of lead, small children can be heavily affected by the lead causing their IQs to be lowered. • For adults, their exposure with lead can greatly increase their chances of having heart attacks or strokes.
