Task 1: Compilation of Pre-existing Knowledge About Egg and Juvenile Observation INTERREG IVA Project Background photo by kind permission of Paul Naylor
Task 1.1: Creation of a geodatabase, compiling known spawning and juvenile locations
Task 1.2: National datasets (UK) • Marine survey data (Professional) held by MarLIN (includes some CEFAS data) • Marine Life Survey Data (collected by volunteers) collated by MarLIN • Marine Nature Conservation Review (MNCR) and associated benthic marine data held and managed by JNCC • Seasearch Marine Surveys, provided by Marine Conservation Society • Volunteer sightings data held by the DASSH Data Archive Centre • Mollusc (marine) data for Great Britain and Ireland, provided by Conchological Society of Great Britain & Ireland • MBA trawl survey records A total of 2035records have been added from these sources
Task 1.2: Fisheries Surveys • IFREMER Scallop survey, Bay of Seine, Eastern Channel database • CEFAS Egg data • Isle of White and Hampshire Wild Life Trust Zostera marina survey • Sussex Sea Fisheries Committee small fish survey in Chichester Harbour. A total of 627 records have been added from these sources.
Task 1.2: Published Literature • Published literature and grey literature has been searched and all relevant records of cuttlefish sightings and spawning grounds extracted and added these to the database. A total of 33 records have been added from these sources
Task 1.2: Cuttlewatch Sightings A total of 50 records have been added from this source. New Records: Hotline: 01752 255026 Text: 07806 938789 Email: CRESH@mba.ac.uk • Where and when • Whether male, female, juvenile or eggs. • Behaviour • Substrata/habitat
Task 1.2: CRESH Records • Diving survey results UK • Diving survey results France (to be added) • Juvenile sampling surveys UK and France (to be added) • Egg collection UK and France (to be added) A total of 31 records have so been added from this source (UK only).
Task 1.2 • To date a total of 2776 records have now been added to the geodatabase
Adult Records • National datasets contain a mixture of records including eggs, juveniles and adults. • Adults records will be used with caution to predict ‘hotspots’ for cuttlefish and will not be used for more detailed spatial analysis unless information is available on confirming whether individuals were mating or spawning.
Task 1.2: Data Gaps • Egg and juvenile data information still low • Any other surveys or sightings to add to the data collection? • We will begin analysing the data for Task 3 in January, so any further sightings/surveys need to be send to me before 31st December 2010
Task 1.2 Questionnaires • As part of an MSc project, questionnaires were designed and distributed to fishermen. • Of a total of 13 fishermen approached, 5 questionnaires were completed

Task 1.3: Preparation of task summary report and dissemination of results
Task 1.3: Next Steps Combine all outstanding records Complete confidence assessment Complete temporal and spatial analysis Provide a draft and final report
