Andrew Giles, the new Minister for Immigration, Citizenship and Multicultural affairs is a spark of hope for those who have waited years to become Australian citizens. He is committed to bringing all Australians together to benefit from Australia’s multicultural diversity. He has criticised the former Morrison government for neglecting immigration functions. Introduction
Dan Tehan, the former Minister of Immigration, stated that such neglect was a direct result of the pandemic and that the new government needed to act quickly on this issue. The new government is committed to working particularly on parent visas, a major issue for the Indian-Australian community. Families have been torn apart for multiple years now by the pandemic, and Giles has shown great promise and enthusiasm in correcting this.
Currently, there is a long waiting period to acquire Australian citizenship. Giles is focused first and foremost on clearing the backlog in the visa department which was caused by the neglect and gridlocking of the visa system and citizenship processing under the Liberal government. A change in government will hopefully mean a change in the barring of entry into Australia as many have been separated from their loved ones and unable to see husbands, wives, and parents.
For Giles to remedy this situation, he needs to firstly make his expectations to the department very clear that applications will be processed both fairly and within a reasonable time-period. Secondly, more financial and human resources must be allocated to the visa processing department. The current backlog is a detrimental situation and we are looking forward to the seeing the amendments that will be made while the immigration department is under the regulation of Giles.
