  1. Understanding Water-Quality Change in the Choptank Watershed and the Eastern Shore of Chesapeake Bay A mix of old and new approaches

  2. Framework for change assessment • Choptank River Input Station • Additional Historical data • water-quality • Ground water • Additional tributaries • Land management etc…. • Ongoing USGS Efforts • CEEP • Groundwater flow modeling • NAWQA Mid-Atlantic Coastal Plain analysis • Land cover / land management change analysis • Partner contributions****

  3. General Approach • Develop Conceptual Model(s) • Gather supporting information • Test, Explanatory power • Accept, Reject or Refine for Conceptual Model(s)

  4. Nitrogen Trends Total Nitrogen Dissolved Nitrate Nitrogen

  5. Dissolved Inorganic Phosphorus Total Phosphorus Suspended Sediment

  6. Choptank Nitrogen Example • Nitrate Trend… Upward • Organic and particulate nitrogen downward • Conceptual Model (s): • Nitrogen use rates have decreased / the increase in dissolved nitrogen in a delayed response from years of applications… it will take xx years to see a decrease • Nitrogen has been diverted from surface to ground water through various nutrient management activities • Excess Nitrogen application rates have decreased resulting is less residual nitrogen for runoff • ………

  7. Testing and Analysis • Extended Time period • Choptank (1964) • Land Management Analysis • Track Farm Practice History • Evolution of Poultry and supporting farm practices • Understanding Groundwater flow and Lag Times: • Model estimates of response in streams • Physical Hydrology perspective of the role of reconstructed wetlands. • Track Changes in other watersheds • Nitrogen, Nitrate, Geochemical indicators

  8. How can you participate? • Incorporate Watershed modeling in testing and evaluation of conceptual models. • Evaluation of model input parameters relative to locally intensive information • Bring in results from other studies – Pocomoke Paired watersheds. • Contribute thoughts and Ideas. • Bring a similar process to your favorite region
