  2. Team “M.A.C.H.V.A.C.” • Support Team • Client • Victoria Ertelt • PSU Advisor • Dr. David Sailor • Design Advisor • Evan Waymire • Design Team • Ras Wickramaratne • Santiago Rodriguez • John Slate • Ghassan Mustafa • Ali Alsahaf

  3. Mt. Angel Abbey • Abbey founded in 1882 by Swiss Benedictine monks. • In 1887 the monks established the Mt. Angel college & High school. • In 1889 under direction of the Archbishop of Oregon City, seminary was established.

  4. The Library • Designed by modernist Finish architect Alvar Aalto ( Famous for designing M.I.T. Baker House residence hall) • Completed in 1970 • 44,000 sq ft., three-story • Over 5000 Rare book collection and antiquities

  5. The Issue • Under built HVAC system • Over 40-years old system. Almost end of its life cycle. “During the original mechanical design work for this project, consideration was given to minimum provisions for future air-conditioning (i.e. cooling)” -O’Kelly and Schoenlank Consulting Engineers 06/09/1969

  6. The Issue • Occupant discomfort in :Carrels, Auditorium, and Catalog room.

  7. The Solution • Evaluate and model an efficient HVAC system. • Select a monitoring system for a vault that has temperature/humidity sensitive materials. • Estimate a payback period for the new system.

  8. PDS • Primary requirements: • Thermal comfort for occupants defined by ASHRAE Standard 55-2004(General occupancy standard) • Ventilation and Indoor Air Quality defined by ASHRAE Standard 62.1-2004(General occupancy standard) • ASHRAE requirements for preservation of public collections.(Library specific standard)

  9. PDS • Secondary requirements: • Low lifecycle cost • Low Energy cost • The system needs to generate less than 40 decibels of background noise • Design Constraints: • No changes to the interior or exterior design • Minimal changes to ducting system

  10. The Project Plan

  11. Major Risks • Failure to control temperature and humidity in vault and otherrare book rooms • Reduction: • Collect data about current environment • Research ideal conditions for books and antiquities • Failure to control thermal comfort in library zones • Reduction: • Set up sufficient temperature and humidity sensors • Model library in more than one program

  12. Major Risks (continued) • Errors in computer model • Reduction: • Do sensitivity analysis on computer model • Calibrate model with collected data
