A STUPID BOASTFUL MANPROVERBS 6:1-2 • Proverbs 6:1-2 (ESV) • 1 My son, if you have put up security for your neighbor, have given your pledge for a stranger, • 2 if you are snared in the words of your mouth, caught in the words of your mouth, • Don’t cosign a note unless you can pay for it • Generosity – yes; Boastful – no • Living within your means honors God
A STUPID BOASTFUL MANPROVERBS 6:3-5 • Proverbs 6:3-5 (HCSB) • 3 Do this, then, my son, and free yourself, for you have put yourself in your neighbor’s power: Go, humble yourself, and plead with your neighbor. • 4 Don’t give sleep to your eyes or slumber to your eyelids. • 5 Escape like a gazelle from a hunter, like a bird from a fowler’s trap. • Urgently humble yourself and try to escape from your self inflicted poverty • Learn from a bad example
A STUPID LAZY MANPROVERBS 6:6-8 • Proverbs 6:6-8 (ESV) • 6 Go to the ant, O sluggard; consider her ways, and be wise. • 7 Without having any chief, officer, or ruler, • 8 she prepares her bread in summer and gathers her food in harvest. • The sluggard is the student of the ant! • The ant has God given wisdom to work • The sluggard is rebelling against the same wisdom
A STUPID LAZY MANPROVERBS 6:9-11 • Proverbs 6:9-11 (ESV) • 9 How long will you lie there, O sluggard? When will you arise from your sleep? • 10 A little sleep, a little slumber, a little folding of the hands to rest, • 11 and poverty will come upon you like a robber, and want like an armed man. • Wake up! Grow up! You are responsible! • Self inflicted poverty
A WICKED MANPROVERBS 6:12-19 • Proverbs 6:12-19 (ESV) • 12 A worthless person, a wicked man, goes about with crooked speech, • 13 winks with his eyes, signals with his feet, points with his finger, • 14 with perverted heart devises evil, continually sowing discord; • 15 therefore calamity will come upon him suddenly; in a moment he will be broken beyond healing. • 16 There are six things that the LORD hates, seven that are an abomination to him: • 17 haughty eyes, a lying tongue, and hands that shed innocent blood, • 18 a heart that devises wicked plans, feet that make haste to run to evil, • 19 a false witness who breathes out lies, and one who sows discord among brothers.
THE HOLY TRIUNE GOD’S ATTRIBUTES • The Holy Triune God is love • The Holy Triune God hates unrighteousness • Any person with unrighteousness will suffer God’s wrath, separation and death • Someone will die for every sin • 2 Corinthians 5:21 (ESV) • 21 For our sake he made him to be sin who knew no sin, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God.
THE WICKED MANLEARN FROM A BAD EXAMPLE • Haughty eyes: pride, arrogance • The essence of rebellion – denying God’s authority • Crooked, lying, false speech • Christ the Truth or Satan the father of lies? • Feet that run to evil • What do you desire? What are you doing with your time? • Sows discord • Discord or Peacemaker? • Hands that shed innocent blood • Harms others. Do you value all people? Sanctity of human life! • A perverted heart that devises evil – The origin of sin • Matthew 15:19 (ESV) • For out of the heart come evil thoughts, murder, adultery, sexual immorality, theft, false witness, slander.
PROVERBS 6:20-23HOW TO STAY PURE • Proverbs 6:20-23 (ESV) • 20 My son, keep your father’s commandment, and forsake not your mother’s teaching. • 21 Bind them on your heart always; tie them around your neck. • 22 When you walk, they will lead you; when you lie down, they will watch over you; and when you awake, they will talk with you. • 23 For the commandment is a lamp and the teaching a light, and the reproofs of discipline are the way of life,
GOD’S WORD vs.YOUR “NATURAL” INCLINATION • Psalms 119:9-11 (ESV) • 9 How can a young man keep his way pure? By guarding it according to your word. • 10 With my whole heart I seek you; let me not wander from your commandments! • 11 I have stored up your word in my heart, that I might not sin against you. • Psalms 119:105-106 (ESV) • 105 Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path. • 106 I have sworn an oath and confirmed it, to keep your righteous rules. • God’s Word: know it, believe it, live it…You?
THE WICKED WOMANPROVERBS 6:24-25 • Proverbs 6:24-25 (ESV) • 24 to preserve you from the evil woman, from the smooth tongue of the adulteress. • 25 Do not desire her beauty in your heart, and do not let her capture you with her eyelashes; • Satan uses her words, beauty and eyes as bait • All traps lure with something desired • Don’t make excuses or complain. It’s your responsibility to avoid her and God holds you accountable! • Go to God’s provision: your wife!
SINFUL SEXDIFFERENCES • Proverbs 6:26 (ESV) • 26 for the price of a prostitute is only a loaf of bread, but a married woman hunts down a precious life. • Fornication: sex between unmarried people • Prostitution: sex is bought • Adultery: at least one person is married • Marriage changes everything!
MARRIAGE CHANGES EVERYTHING • Privileges • Illustrate Christ and the church • Establish a family • God ordained unlimited sex • Sins effects • Husband profanes Christ’s character • Wife profanes the church’s relationship to Christ • The family is wrecked • Adultery is the worst sex sin
CERTAINTY OF CONSEQUENCESPROVERBS 6:27-29 • Proverbs 6:27-29 (ESV) • 27 Can a man carry fire next to his chest and his clothes not be burned? • 28 Or can one walk on hot coals and his feet not be scorched? • 29 So is he who goes in to his neighbor’s wife; none who touches her will go unpunished. • God demands holiness! • Disobedience never brings true happiness
THE THIEF VS. THE ADULTERER • Proverbs 6:30-31 (ESV) • 30 People do not despise a thief if he steals to satisfy his appetite when he is hungry, • 31 but if he is caught, he will pay sevenfold; he will give all the goods of his house. • Thievery is a sin and will be punished • Sometimes the thief is not despised
THE THIEF VS. THE ADULTERER • Proverbs 6:32-35 (ESV) • 32 He who commits adultery lacks sense; he who does it destroys himself. • 33 He will get wounds and dishonor, and his disgrace will not be wiped away. • 34 For jealousy makes a man furious, and he will not spare when he takes revenge. • 35 He will accept no compensation; he will refuse though you multiply gifts.
ADULTERY EFFECTS • Adultery is stupid • Adultery is a type of suicide • Adultery brings eternal dishonor and disgrace • Adultery destroys families • Adultery produces a jealous rage that will not be compensated

God is faithful, and he will not let you be tempted beyond your ability, but with the temptation he will also provide the way of escape, that you may be able to endure it.
GOD’S SOLUTION • Ephesians 6:10-11 (ESV) • 10 Finally, be strong in the Lord and in the strength of his might. • 11 Put on the whole armor of God, that you may be able to stand against the schemes of the devil. • What are you doing to honor God and protect your family?
