Facet Experiment The purpose of Facet Experiment is the following. - Investigation on Mechanism of Faceted Cellular Array Growth. Onboard Outcomes from the experiment • Temperature data monitored by Facet Cell (downlinked to ground via Solution Crystallization Observation Facility (SCOF)) • Video Images taken by SCOF (downlinked to ground via Image Processing Unit (IPU)) • Microgravity environment data taken by Microgravity Measurement Apparatus (MMA). (downlinked to ground via Image Processing Unit (IPU)) Video Images taken by SCOFMagnification: x2Image Size: 3.2mm x 2.4mm Mach Zehnder Interferometer (780nm) Mach ZehnderInterferometer (532nm) Amplitude Modulation Microscope Transparent
Facet Cell Facet Cell - Facet Cell is one of SCOF Crystal Growth Cell dedicated to the Facet Experiment. - Functions of the Facet Cell are to: - make/melt crystal. - monitor temperature for analysis of crystallization process. - Facet Cell consists of the following items. - Facet Cell - Facet Cable (connected to SCOF) - 2 Specimen cells contain mixed solution of Phenyl Salicylate and t-Butanol (4 mol% and 8 mol%) (Toxic hazard level: 0 (zero)). - Sample melting temperature: approx. 34 degrees Celsius. 2 Specimen cells (Glass windows areon top and bottom (in total 4 windows)) Facet Cell Facet Cell installed in SCOF
LEGEND: :Crew operation necessary. :Crew operation as required. :Ground operation. Facet Operations Overview - Connect SCOF Payload Bus Cable and IPU User Video Cables. SCOF Cable Connection - Install Facet Cell in SCOF. Facet Cell Installation * SCOF Activation IPU Activation MMA/MLT Activation - Activate UDC and MMA/MLT. Optical Adjustment (ground) IPU Video Downlink - Adjust focus, field of view, and interference fringes of SCOF if ground is difficult to adjust. Optical Adjustment (crew) Facet Cell Reorientation - Rotate Facet Cell to change samples. * Experiment MMA Data Acquisition - Flip down Secondary Power Off switch of SCOF per ground request. Only if ground cannot power off SCOF while temperature of seed crystal is reaching 34 degrees Celsius. Secondary Power Off * Repeat experiment as ground changes experiment parameters. SCOF Deactivation IPU Deactivation MMA/MLT Deactivation - Deactivate UDC and MMA/MLT. - Remove and trash Facet Cell. Facet Cell Removal
