(Sabbath)= important ritual that is based on creation stories of Genesis and time is set aside for prayer, family and friends (Friday sunset – synagogue- lighting of candle “let there be light”, Sabbath dinner (kiddush) songs and prayer) • Blessings and prayer • Minyan= 10 males (or females) over age of 13 in communal prayer of worship • Kashruth (kosher)= distinctiveness of group and food laws show humility and humanity (in killing of animals and gratitude to God for food) • Shabbat Circumcision • Shofar= ram’s horn sounded to call people together • Bar / Bat Mitvah • Marriage • Death and Shiva

Seder Meal Each component of the Seder meal has particular importance to the Jewish religion.
Symbols • Star of David= Shield of David or Solomon = unknown origins = shape of King David’s shield; symbol adopted by Zionists • magic pagan emblem used to ward off evil • adopted and used by King David on shields of his soldiers to symbolize their goal= equality (equilateral triangles) • sign of the coming Messiah who it is believed to come from the House of David • Symbol of universality of God (six sides represent north, south, east west and land above and world below) Today the Star of David appears on the flag of Israel.
Menorah= ancient source of light 7 branched= Sabbath 9 branched= Hanukah • symbol of the state of Israel • described in Old Testament (Exodus): God instructs Moses to make a candlestick of gold with 6 branches plus the main stem and place it in the tabernacle and place oil and cotton within the stems • used in Hanukkah lights
