A Brief Summary • KatnissEverdeen, a young sixteen year old girl lives in a world called Panem, where North America has been split up into 12 districts. • To be reminded of the days where District Thirteen existed and the cruel ruling of the capitol, two tributes from each district, one boy and one girl, compete in the Hunger Games once a year. • Peeta and Katniss are the tributes for District Twelve and ust compete in an arena controlled by the capitol with the rest of the tributes where these twenty four boys and girls fight until their death, and only one is left standing.
Where’s The Science? • Peetareally excels in strength and he needs to be trained before the games to get stronger. • In order to life weights, a lot of energy is required in that process. For example, lifting weights is an anaerobic exercise • There are two types of anaerobic respiration, lactic acid fermentation and alcoholic fermentation. • In lactic acid fermentation pyruvic acid is converted to lactic acid, which can sometimes build up in muscles, which causes cramps in them. • We perform anaerobic exercise in school when we walk from class to class everyday.
On The Other Hand… • Katniss if forced to run for miles to flee from the poisonous dogs the capitol has sent out to kill her. • She is taking in huge amounts of oxygen in long amounts of time. Cell respiration is used all the time, even when she is sleeping to recover • The tributes are constantly moving in all sorts of ways and in order to perform daily tasks they need energy produced by the reactions in their cells.
Anaerobic Vs. Aerobic Exercise • Anaerobic Exercise can happen two ways • Lactic acid (used by humans) • Alcoholic fermentation (used mainly for beer and wine industry) Does not require oxygen Examples: weight lifting, walking, short sprints Aerobic Exercise Requires oxygen • Krebs Cycle: 2 compound carbon gets broken down to CO2, Hydrogen atoms, and ATP • 2 ATP 6 NADH 2 FADH2 Electron Transport Chain • Produces most ATP • 34
Cellular Respiration • Converts unusable energy to usable energy • Cells needs to undergo this before performing anaerobic or aerobic exercise • Respiration produces water carbon dioxide and ATP • C6H12O6+6CO2 6CO2+6H2O+~38ATP
Great Book! • The Hunger Games was a great book and all of you should definitely read it! It was a great mix of romance, action, and suspense. I loved it!
