Week 2 Days 1 and 2 Please get your Writer’s Notebook and a textbook. Create a new writing section in your notebook and label it: Poetry Conventions In this section, compose a well-written paragraph using the following as a topic: Some people believe modern American society is hopeless. They say we are at the lowest level of spirit, courage, and awareness of others. What do you think? Is that a true statement?
Background for The Hollow Men, by T.S. Eliot p. 1163 Dante’s Divine Comedy is a work used by Eliot to promote his ideas in his poem. This is referred to as an allusion (not to be confused with illusion). Poets and other writers use the words or concepts from famous text to help readers understand themes, set a tone, or create meaning. Allusions are not seen as plagiarism because they are words or phrases that are well-known and easily recognizable. If you use an allusion that contains a direct citation, you should use italics or surround the words with quotation marks. If you are simply referring to the work or concept, you may paraphrase, but be careful to make it clear the words are not yours. Dante’s work is divided into three parts: Hell, Purgatory, Heaven Eliot’s speakers are in a form of Hell in which there is no real hope of Purgatory or Heaven. Eliot was one of the first poets of what we call the Modernist Movement. This movement took poetry out of the “flowery” pastoral stage and moved it into a fragmented, bleak world. Our assignment will focus on that.
Your assignment: Due at the end of class on the second day Please create this chart on a separate piece of notebook paper. Find at least ten examples of Modernist thought in the poem, The Hollow Men (p.1163), and write an essay discussing them.
Week 2 Days 3 and 4 Please get your Writer’s Notebook and be seated at the bell. Turn to the Poetry Conventions section and respond to the following: I (believe/do not believe) today’s music artists and writers of movies and television focus too much on the hopelessness of our modern world. Here are my reasons for believing that.
Week 2 Days 3 and 4Assignment is due at the end of Day 4 Your assignment is to work within your group and write an original poem that contains at least three allusions. You may use famous quotes or song lyrics. You may also refer to well-known texts such as religious documents or books. This poem must be true to the Modernist Movement and paint a depressing picture of current life. Even if that thought is against your personal philosophy, you need to stretch as a writer by painting a dark, dismal portrait with your words.
