  2. Importance of Mental Health • Research Shows that the condition of your mental health has a profound effect on your physical condition

  3. Stress • Your body’s response to external and/or internal changes • Stressors trigger stress • Stressors may include; academic tests, athletic performances, public speaking • But stress is not always negative, on order to function your body needs a certain amount of stress • Fight of Flight response – experienced when you face bodily harm • Gives your body a shot of adrenaline to fight, or run away

  4. Type A or Type B? • Your personality influences how you respond to stress • Are you intense? Seem hurried? Really competitive? Then you may be a Type A • Are you calm? Are you patient? Are you not hurried? Then you may be a Type B • A person can learn to adapt their personality to handle stress more effectively

  5. How Stress Effects You • Positive Stress causes you to face and accomplish daily tasks • Completing homework, getting chores done • Distress is when stress reaches a point that feelings of depression and exhaustion replace the natural feeling to accomplish tasks • When distress outweighs positive stress, a person can be overwhelmed • This is the time when you need to go to God in prayer. When you feel overwhelmed, often times it is a result of not spending time in God’s Word.

How Stress Effects You • Stages of Stress • Alarm – body and mind go on high alert • Resistance – body adapts, “flight or fight” • Fatigue – a general tired feeling (both physical and mental) • A person experiencing stress may face difficulty concentrating, mood swings, and risk of substance abuse.

How to Cope with Stress • Spend time in God’s Word and Prayer everyday! • Prevent Stress, work on time management so that you don’t get weighed down • Exercise, by exercising you stay physically healthy and your body releases hormones that help fight feelings of stress. • Get Sleep! • Eat Healthy! • Avoid comfort foods and caffeine

  8. How to Cope with Stress • If feeling overwhelmed, who can help me? • Your parents • Teachers/Coaches, Guidance Counselors • Pastor • Medical Professionals

  9. Anxiety • Condition of feeling uneasy or worried about what may happen • To fight anxiety; • Exercise • Realistic expectations • Positive view of accomplishments

  10. Depression • Prolonged feeling of helplessness, hopelessness, and sadness • Reactive depression – response to a stressful event (loss of a friend), often goes away with time • Major Depression – medical condition requiring medical attention

  11. Getting Help for Anxiety and Depression • Talk to supportive people • If the problem persists; • Seek out you support group (parents, teachers, pastors, doctor)

Mental Disorders • Anxiety Orders • Phobia – fear of items • Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder – persistent unwanted thoughts • Panic – unexplained terror • Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder- stress after a terrifying event • Eating Disorders • Pressures that consume a person’s self-image of their body • Conduct Disorders • A pattern of behavior that violates the right of others • Lying, theft, aggression, violence, truancy, vandalism

Mental Disorders • Personality Disorders • Think and behave in ways that make it difficult for people to have a relationship with • Antisocial personality disorder – irritable, aggressive, impulsive, violent • Borderline personality disorder – poor self-esteem, fear abandonment, engage high-risk behavior • Passive-Aggressive personality disorder – uncooperative, resent being told what to do, anger issues

  14. Suicide • The deliberate taking of one’s own life • Caused by extreme depression or alienation • Warning Signs • Verbal • “I want to die” • “I won’t have to put up with this much longer” • Writing poems/songs that deal with death • Suicide Threats • Nonverbal • Obsession with Death • With drawl from friends • Bizarre behavior • Substance abuse

  15. Preventing Suicide • Initiate meaningful conversation –show interest and compassion for a person • Show support and ask questions – remind person that most problems have solutions • Try to persuade person to seek help- offer to go with person to trusted person
