Objectives • Rightly show the information(2Tim 2:14) • my aim is to present core Scripture truths aptly, accurately, fairly and boldly • Let the text do the convicting(Heb 4:12) • the written Word, when read and studied with a humble heart, has God’s transforming power • Urge your personal search(Acts 17:11) • you need to be convinced by your own study and self-examination, so check everything out • Give glory to God(Mark 2:12) • God is pleased when His Truth is proclaimed, and delighted when His Word takes root in a human life

Assumptions • Scripture is the only authoritative source – anything else is man’s work • Bible text takes priority over church authority or religious tradition or the writing of men (2Thes 2:13) • Our English translations are sufficiently accurate – they are a reliable source • different translations bring their own strengths and weaknesses; thus no single translation should be given pre-eminence; all translations (as distinct from paraphrases) can contribute to understanding • Reasoningandpondering are required – and thinking must be logical and consistent • Making sense is expected (e.g., Is 1:18,43:9, 1Cor 11:14)

Resurrected • in fact Christ has been raised (1Cor 15:20) • impossible for Death to hold him (Acts 2:24) • first principle teaching (1Cor 15:1-4) • fulfilled promises to the fathers (Acts 13:33) • set us free from the law of sin and death (Rom 8:2, 6:22) • given a name above every name (Phil 2:9) • Jesus is the resurrection & the life (John 11:25) • the Christian hope (Acts 24:15, 26:6-8, Rom 8:24)

Application: • A resurrected Jesus is the pivotal point of Bible Christianity • We expect to be among those raised “at his coming” (15:23) 1Corinthinans 15:20 Res-2 But in fact Christ has been raised from the dead, the first fruits of those who have fallen asleep Points: • Stated to be a FACT! • “first fruits” = initial, primary, the best; given as an offering • to God (cf. Gen 49:3, Ex 23:16,19, Lev 23:10,17,19) • “fallen asleep” = died (in the hope of the resurrection)

Application: For we know that Christ being raised from the dead will never die again; death no longer has dominion over him…So you also must consider yourselves dead to sin and alive to God in Christ Jesus (Rom 6:9,11). Acts 2:24 Res-3 • But God raised him up, having loosed the pangs of death, because it was not possible for him to be held by it. Points: • Simple but key teaching: God raisedJesus, who was dead. • Law of sin and death: the soul that sins shall die (Ezek 18:4,20) • Jesus did not sin (Heb 4:15) yet he died (Jn 19:30, 33); since he • wasn’t like Rom5:12 men, some further action had to happen • Man + sin = death; man Jesus + sinless = death + resurrection

Application: Our salvation depends on a crucified and risenJesus (1Cor 15:17) 1Corinthians 15:1-4 Res-4 • Now I would remind you, brethren, in what terms I preached to you the gospel, which you received, in which you stand, by which you are saved, if you hold it fast--unless you believed in vain. For I delivered to you as of first importance what I also received, that Christ died for our sins in accordance with the scriptures, that he was buried, that he was raised on the third day in accordance with the scriptures… Points: • “first importance” = primary, fundamental priority teaching • “in accordance” {twice} = fulfilled Bible prophecy, down to • the detail of “the third day” (cf. Jonah 1:17, Matt 12:40)

Application: Those who have the faith of Abraham are “fully convinced that God will do what he has promised” (Rom 4:21), namely raising them to eternal life to enjoy the promised earth(Gal 3:29, Heb 11:13-16) Acts 13:33 Res-5 And we bring you the good news that what God promised to the fathers, this he has fulfilled to us their children by raising Jesus… Points: • Another fulfilled prophecy regarding Jesus’ resurrection • “to the fathers” = reference to Abraham and David (cf. Matt 1:1) • God’s promise to Abraham about a “seed” or offspring dealt • specifically with resurrection(Gen 22:18, Gal 3:18, Heb 11:19); • David also foresaw the resurrection (2Sam 7:12-19, Acts 2:31)

Application: • Contrast the outcome of Christ’s obedience vs. the sin of Adam: • “If, because of one man's trespass, death reigned through that one man, much • more will those who receive the abundance of grace and the free gift of • righteousness reign in life through the one man Jesus Christ.” (Rom 5:17) Romans 8:2, 6:22 Res-6 For the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus has set me free from the law of sin and death …But now that you have been set free from sin and have become slaves of God, the return you get is sanctification and its end, eternal life. Points: • “law of sin and death” = sinners must die (see earlier slide) • When believers obey the gospel call and standard of teaching in • Christ, they are “set free from sin” to serve God (Rom 6:17-18) • Jesus also redeemed Jewish believers from “the curse of the law” • of Moses, for sanctification (Gal 3:10-14, Heb 9:13-15, 10:1-14)

Application: • A disciple is expected to “bear his own cross” (Lk 16:27) • Those who faithfully follow will share the suffering & glory, • knowing the power of the resurrection(Phil 3:7-11) Philippians 2:9 Res-7 • Therefore God has highly exalted him and bestowed on him the name which is above every name,… Points: • Context:“became obedient unto death … on a cross” (v.8) • Because of Jesus’ humble mindset and taking on a servant’s role, • God exalted the name of Jesus, e.g., called:Son, King of kings • Such exaltation occurred in conjunction with his resurrection

Application: • Both the just& unjust are resurrected (Acts 24:15,Dan 12:2) • Only the faithful are given eternal life (Matt 25:48) John 11:25 Res-8 • Jesus said to her, "I am the resurrection and the life; he who believes in me, though he die, yet shall he live… Points: • This said before Jesus himself died and was raised by God • Jesus thus had total confidence in his Father (cf John 10:18) • = he had faith that God would make him alive again (cf. us!) • “and the life” indicates immortality distinct from resurrection

Application: As it was for Abraham, “it will be reckoned to us who believe in him that raised from the dead Jesus our Lord” (Rom 4:24,11-12) Acts 24:15, 26:6-8 Res-9 …having a hope in God which these themselves accept, that there will be a resurrection of both the just and the unjust…. And now I stand here on trial for hope in the promise made by God to our fathers, to which our twelve tribes hope to attain, as they earnestly worship night and day. And for this hope I am accused by Jews, O king! Why is it thought incredible by any of you that God raises the dead? Points: • “hope in God” = “hope in promise” = “hope to attain” • hope of resurrection was key to the faith of Abraham and David, • “fathers” of Israel (Heb 11:9, John 8:56, Acts 2:25-35)

Application: • The Christian hope is eternal life on a new earth, with Jesus • That hope becomes realityonly at Christ’s return, not before Acts 28:20, Romans 8:24 Res-10 For this reason therefore I have asked to see you and speak with you, since it is because of the hope of Israel that I am bound with this chain …as we wait for the adoption as sons, the redemption of our bodies. For in this hope we were saved. Points: • “the hope of Israel” = hope of the resurrection (Acts 26:6) • Paul’s preaching integrated the gospel of the Kingdom of God • with the fact of the resurrected Jesus (Acts 28:23,31) • “this hope” = belief in risen Lord has past and future aspects

Supplemental Reference Material #2 Impossible for Jesus to be held by death • Law of sin and death: • For in the day that you eat it [a sin before God],you shall die (Gen 2:17) • The soul [person] that sins shall die (Ezek 18:4,20) • Therefore as sin came into the world through one man and death through sin, and so death spread to all men because all men sinned – (Rom 5:12) • The wages of sin is death (Rom 6:23) • For the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus has set me free from the law of sin and death (Rom 8:12) • The sting of death is sin, and the power of sin is the law (1Cor 15:56) • Then desire when it has conceived gives birth to sin; and sin when it is full-grown brings forth death (James 1:15).
