  1. Who determines the grade you earn? • What graduation requirement does this class fulfill? • T/F: Your grades will be rounded at .6 & up. • Tests and quizzes make up about ___% of your final grade and the final is _____%. • What website do you check for homework? • What website do you check for grades? Are they the same websites? • In terms of homework, what is important that you do? • What should you be doing when the bell rings? • What is the schools tardy policy? • Can you use the restroom in class? • T/F: Late work is never accepted.

  2. EVOLUTION Some misconceptions…

  3. Misconceptions are all around. • They come from: • Everyday observations • Generalizations • Everyday words vs. scientific words • TV/movies • Sometimes, we’re taught them • Can you think of any? Here’s a good one to watch (do you know why we have seasons?): Are you smarter than a Harvard Grad??

  4. Reality: Why we have seasons

  5. Some Common Myths/Misconceptions: Evolution • Evolution is how humans formed…and we all came from apes. • Evolution is just a theory, it’s incomplete and not supported very well. • Evolution is when things change to “get better”. • Animals adapt because they need to (this is natural selection). • Biological fitness is about an animals strength. • Traits that you acquire in your lifetime will get passed on to offspring.

  6. Myth: Evolution is how humans formed…and we all came from apes. • Reality: Evolution is any biological change over time.

  7. Myth: Evolution is just a theory, it’s incomplete and not supported very well. • In Science, a theory is a hypothesis that has been supported over and over again. • Gravity is also a theory!

  8. Myth: Evolution is a progression towards “getting better”

  9. In reality, we see a changes in populations of organisms, based on the environment and those that actually survive. (everyday term vs. science term)

  10. Myth: you can acquire traits or adapt based on needs. Reality: Evolution can only act on existing traits. Its not about needs, its about the environment and who is better adapted to it- those are the traits we’ll see more often.

  11. Ex: Variations/Adaptations • Variations (differences between individuals in a population) allow an organism to be better adapted to their environment. • Better adapted = survive and reproduce! We’ll see these traits more often over time.

  12. Myth: Biological fitness is about an animals strength. • In science, fitness is an organisms ability to survive and REPRODUCE (pass on their genes).

  13. Myth: Traits that you acquire in your lifetime will get passed on to offspring.

  14. Again, evolution can only act on existing traits (those found in your genes). Think about it, if you died your hair or got a tattoo, would you children have it too?
