Bramall Hall • On Friday 24th January our class went on a trip to Bramall Hall as a result of our Tudor topic. • First of all, Meg, a servant in the Davenport household, welcomed us in and showed us Sir Davenport’s cousin Geoffrey. Then Meg showed us our clothes during the day. The girls wore a ruff bonnet and a kirtle. Furthermore the boys wore a hose, cap and a white ruff. • As soon as we were dressed, Mr Geoffrey showed us how to write like a Tudor. With a goose feather, you had to write your name and the year 1599. It was thoroughly enjoyable but on the other hand I’m glad I’m born in the modern day. • Soon after, we travelled to the Still room where we learnt about Tudor medicines. Then Meg showed us about crushed beetle lipstick and how Tudors thought a hot nail with goose fat on top cured toothache. We also made a nose gay which included rose petals and lavender. • Soon after, we began to tuck into our grand, magnificent lunch fortunately I was famished so I devoured it. My lunch included a pear, a chicken leg, a sandwich and 2 pieces of flapjack. • Finally, we did some dancing in a wooden bare ballroom where we perfected a couple of dance steps. Then our time came to explore Mistress Dorothy’s bedchamber. Unusually her bed was short because of the Angel of Death which she thought would take her away. After we passed a beautifully engraved carpet and went into a room full of exquisite old fashioned instruments. There was a crumpet, harpsichord, and a crumphorn and I thought they all had peculiar sounds. • In conclusion, I thoroughly enjoyed it and what is more I learnt a lot.
